April 08, 2018 | Women's Golf
NAPA, Calif. ā The University of Colorado women's golf team is in 12th place after the first round of the 2018 Silverado Showdown, shooting a 14-over par 302 on the 6,202-yard Silverado Country Club North Course on Sunday.
Ā
The No. 20 ranked and host Buffaloes carded their highest team score in their last seven rounds, but high numbers were the norm through the first 18. All 17 teams played over par and only six of 90 individuals played in the red.
Ā
Colorado is only eight strokes out of the top five and 12 behind first round leader, No. 8 USC, which shot a 2-over par 290. The Trojans have a two-stroke lead over No. 1 UCLA and No. 13 Arizona. California is three strokes back while No. 4 Stanford is in fifth at 6-over.
Ā
USC's Jennifer Chang shot a 6-under 66 to take a two-shot lead after 18 holes. California's Jiyoon Jang and Stanford's Mika Liu are tied for second with a 68 rounding out the only three sub-70 scores shot on Sunday.
Ā
"The team started the day pretty well up until No. 14 then the bogeys and doubles really snuck up and grabbed us," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "We just have to do a better job of handling the tough pins and stay away from the big numbers. The field is very strong and scores are pretty close. If we can play some good rounds in the next couple of days we have a very good chance of moving up."
Ā
Senior Brittany Fan, tied for 12th overall with a 1-over 73, led Colorado. She played most of the day in the red, but back-to-back bogeys ended her day just two strokes out of the top five.
Ā
Fan had a good start with a birdie-3 at No. 1. After four-straight pars, she fell back to even with a bogey at the 393-yard par-4 No. 6. She took that stroke right back though, with her second birdie of the front nine, on the par-3 No. 7. Fan stayed at 1-until playing No. 14 and No. 15 at 2-over. She held steady with pars over the final three holes to card the Buffaloes' best score of the round.
Ā
"Brittany looked very good today, she just made a couple of mistakes that led to some bogeys," Kelly said.
Ā
Freshman Alisha Lau played her best round of the spring season with a 2-over 74, tying for 19th overall. She was even on the front nine, which included a birdie on the 148-yard par-3 No. 2. Lau logged a bogey on the par-4 No. 3, but shot par on each of the next six to close out the front. She dropped a pair of strokes after the turn, but moved back to 1-over with her second birdie of the day on the 365-yard par-4 No. 12.
Ā
Lau hit a rough patch down the stretch playing the next five holes at 3-over, but finished the day on a high note with an eagle on the course's longest hole, the 503-yard par-5 No. 18. She holed out from about 100-yards on her third shot for her first collegiate eagle.
Ā
"It was nice to see Alisha have a good day," Kelly said. "Especially making an eagle on 18 after a tough hole on 16."
Ā
Sophomore Kirsty Hodgkins is tied for 51st after a 5-over 77. She logged birdies on final holes of each nine, but struggled with the rest of the course playing at 7-over. Hodgkins was 1-over after five holes but had bogeys on two of the next three before gaining a stroke back on the par-5 No. 9. She stayed at 2-over through 11, but dropped a stroke on four of the next five before closing out with her birdie at No. 18.
Ā
Sophomore Robyn Choi is tied for 63rd after shooting a 6-over 78, her second-highest score of the season. Choi wasn't able to catch a red number in the round, but stayed close at 2-over through the first 13 holes, including nine pars over a 10-hole stretch. Choi fell into trouble on the back, logging back-to-back bogeys at No. 14 and No. 15, and a double-bogey six on the par-4 No. 16.
