Buffaloes Tied For 14th After Two Rounds Of NCAA Championship
May 19, 2018 | Women's Golf
STILLWATER, Okla. ā Mixing a brutally tough course with a shot of Mother Nature made for a long afternoon for the University of Colorado women's golf team.
Ā
The good news though is when the weather cleared and the sun set ā just as the round ended ā the Buffaloes found themselves still in the mix, tied for 14th after the second round of the 2018 NCAA Women's Golf Championship at the Karsten Creek Golf Club.
Ā
No. 28 ranked Colorado shot 13-over, 301, five strokes better than its one round score. The Buffaloes remained tied with No. 18 Wake Forest for the championship at 30-over, 607, falling one spot in the standings from Friday's opening round.
Ā
No. 3 UCLA, on the heels of a tournament-best 9-under round, is the overall leader at 3-under. Top-ranked Alabama, which had the only other under par round of the tournament (-2) is five strokes back at 2-over. No. 6 USC, the day one leader, is a distant third at 13-over.
Ā
Senior Brittany Fan had Colorado's low round of the day at 2-over, 74, and is tied for 36th overall. Sophomore Robyn Choi matched her day-one score with a 3-over, 75. Freshman Alisha Lau turned made the best jump of the day, shooting seven shots better to match Choi at 3-over, 75.
Ā
An afternoon tee time meant Colorado was treated to some good old-fashioned, late-spring Midwest weather. Winds were swirling and gusting early, but the Buffaloes, who started at No. 10, played the back side well at 4-over and hovered around the Top 8 for most of that time.
Ā
Just as Colorado was about to make the turn, rain and lighting in the area caused a 90-minute delay in the action. The Buffaloes weren't able to recapture that momentum once play resumed, playing the front at 9-over. When the last golfers were coming off the course, they were partially being aided by an electronic scoreboard near the clubhouse.
Ā
"They're all experienced players out there and have been through it before," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "Not much you can do but wait it out. We sat in the clubhouse and when it cleared, they were able to hit a few balls and tee it up again. Too bad our momentum kind of stopped, but it's something you have to deal with in golf. Nothing we can control."
Ā
Fan got off to a rough start with an unplayable lie at No. 10, taking a double-bogey. She immediately picked a stroke back up with a birdie at the par-3, No. 11. Fan stayed at 1-over through six, but fell to 3-over after logging three bogeys in a four-hole stretch at the turn. Fan played even on the front, picking up a stroke with a birdie at the par-4, No. 6.
Ā
Lau was 2-over after four holes, but made four-straight pars and added a birdie at the par-5, No. 18 to make the turn at 1-over. She stayed at 1-over through 13, but dropped two strokes on the final five holes. Lau is tied for 98th overall at 13-over, 157.
Ā
"Alisha played well for us today," Kelly said. "Her ball striking was good today and she just managed herself around the golf course. She wasn't as nervous as she was yesterday."
Ā
Choi wasn't able to score in the red, but had the steadiest round of the day. She sprinkled three bogeys ā two on the back and one on the front - around 15 pars and is in a tie for 44th overall at 6-over, 150 through two rounds.
Ā
Sophomore Kirsty Hodgkins carded a 5-over, 77. She had the best start of the day, playing the back nine at 1-under with birdies at the par-4, No. 13 and par-4, No. 17. The front wasn't as kind. Hodgkins had a lost ball at No. 1, settling for double-bogey. It didn't get much better from there a she played the front at 6-over and is tied for 54th for the championship at 7-over, 151.
Ā
Junior Gillian Vance was Colorado's fifth golfer of the day shooting a 7-over, 79. She had a rough start to the round, dropping to 5-over after just four holes, but played well over the final 14 at 2-over. Vance was even over the front nine, which matched the best for the Buffaloes on the day. She had two of the team's four birdies on that side of the course, in back-to-back fashion at the par-4 No. 6 and par -3 No. 7. Vance is tied for 115th overall at 17-over, 161.
Ā
With Saturday's results, Colorado remains on the plus side of advancing to the next phase. The Top 15 teams advance to the final stroke play round on Monday that will then determine the Top 8 teams for the match play championship. There won't be any margin for error tomorrow as six teams are within four strokes of the Buffaloes and Demon Deacons.
Ā
"We have nothing to lose and everything to gain from this point in," Kelly said. "It's just managing the course. Scores were better today because teams are getting used to it, but you can't let up for a minute."
Ā
Colorado will pair with Wake Forest and Florida in Sunday's third round beginning at 11:15 a.m. MT from the No. 1 tee.
Ā
NOTES: Lau set a Colorado freshman record by playing in her 36th round of the season. Fan, Choi and Hodgkins have each played 37 rounds, tying for the most in one season in team history, a record which they will own outright tomorrowā¦Choi's 27 pars through two rounds tie for the third most in the field.
