Clark, Constien Earn All-America Honors at NCAAs
June 09, 2018 | Track and Field
BOULDER – University of Colorado's track and field team finished their weekend of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with two more athletes earning All-American honors.
Valerie Constien ran the finals of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase and finished in fifth place with a time of 9:48.40, earning first team All-America honors. Constien is a junior at CU, so she still has one season left to compete for the Buffs.
"Biggest star of the day and probably of the weekend was Val Constien. (She was) not here a year ago, and really on nobody's radar. She improved almost 20 seconds in the last three or four weeks in the steeplechase, and came within one second of her best ever today in a really competitive field, and our top point scorer this weekend, great run for Val and she's back next year," said CU head coach Mark Wetmore.
Following Constien, senior Erin Clark ran her final race for the Buffs. She competed in the women's 5,000 meter run this evening, crossing the finish line in 15:51.80 in 13th place. This qualified her as a second team All-American, her second All-American honor of the weekend, the first one being in the women's 10,000 meters on Thursday.
"Just finished the 5k with Erin Clark doubling back from the event two nights before. Honestly we feel she did quite well, this might be the deepest 5k we have ever seen, she is in her third weekend of 10k, 5k doubles, getting pretty leg weary, but ran smart and moved up patiently and got another All-American certificate. We are going to be sad to see her go she has been a great leader and reliable performer for us, but I am sure she will be back to come see us." Wetmore said.
During her time at CU, Clark earned five other All-America honors both indoors and outdoors. Academically, Clark earned Pac-12 All-Academic fist team in 2017, All-MPSF Academic honors in 2016 and 2017, and USTFCCA Academic honors in 2017. Clark earned a degree in ecology and evolutionary biology, and is now finishing her master's degree in educational foundations, policy and practice.
