Buffs Headed To Colorado Springs For Annual Training at USOTC
August 10, 2018 | Volleyball
BOULDER—Keeping with tradition, the Colorado volleyball team will once again head to Colorado Springs for its annual preseason camp at the United States Olympic Training Center.
"I really like going to the training center, I have done it six years in a row now," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "It is an opportunity for our team. We are there for three sessions a day, two on the floor, one film. We really don't have time to think about anything else except volleyball, so it's an opportunity to get rid of any sort of noise and just focus on one thing. I think if we did that for the whole year, we would go crazy, but it is a really nice jump start to our season and it allows our players to have some opportunities to bond as well and our freshmen get an opportunity to mix with everybody.
The Buffs will train in Colorado Springs, August 11-17, and will be amongst some of the best athletes in the world.
For the athletes, it's a chance to focus on volleyball as most of them finished up summer school on Friday, which meant they had to divide time between classes, lifting and practices.
"It's just a great time for all of us to spend time together and just really focus on volleyball," senior Alexa Smith said. "We don't have to worry about school at that time of year and can really focus on volleyball."
The USOTC in Colorado Springs is the headquarters for the U.S. Olympic Committee administration and the Olympic Training Center programs. As of August 1998, there are 12 USOC member organizations that have their national headquarters on the complex, and 12 other member organizations and two international sports federations located nearby in Colorado Springs, including USA Volleyball.
After almost a full week of training in Colorado Springs, the Buffs will return to Boulder to host the Black & Gold Scrimmage on Saturday, August 18. The scrimmage is set for a 3 p.m. start at CU Events Center and is open to the public.
