Rivalries Renewed Spreading To CU Soccer This Weekend
August 23, 2018 | Soccer
Buffs host Missouri on Saturday and also welcome Iowa State to Boulder on Sept. 2
BOULDER – "Rivalries Renewed" is the slogan being used around CU's football team ahead of its season-opening games against in-state rival Colorado State on Aug. 31 and former Big 12 competitor Nebraska on Sept. 8.
But Rivalries Renewed is also an appropriate term for CU's non-conference soccer schedule, featuring two former Big 12 rivals. The first Rivalry Renewed is Saturday when Missouri visits Prentup Field at 1 p.m. The Buffs will also welcome Iowa State back to Boulder on Sunday, Sept. 2.
Colorado left the Big 12 for the Pac-12 after the 2010 season and has had mixed results against its old conference opponents, going 2-4-0 in six matches since departing. The Buffs have faced Missouri once during that time, falling 2-1 in overtime in Columbia in 2016, a game when then-freshman goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins had a career-high 12 saves. Sarah Kinzner, who was a sophomore then, scored CU's only goal in that game.
CU earned a 2-1 overtime win over Iowa State in Boulder in 2015, edging the Cyclones on a penalty kick in the 95th minute.
Perhaps the most important game for CU vs. its former Big 12 opponents came in 2016 when it took on Oklahoma State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Buffs came away 3-1 victors in the only postseason matchup with a former Big 12 foe.
Colorado soccer's Big 12 history is deep as it spent its first 15 years of existence in the Big 12 and held the fourth-best record in the league during that span, going 69-66-14 (.510) in the first 15 years of the soccer program, which started in 1996. CU captured a Big 12 regular season championship in 2003 and finished second in 2005. The Buffs also reached the Big 12 Championship game three times in the conference's postseason tournament, but never came away with a title, falling in overtime in 2005, on penalties in 2006 and 1-0 to Missouri in 2008.
CU has struggled against Missouri with a 6-14-1 all-time record against the Tigers. The Buffs have been better in Boulder, however, with a 3-4-0 record between Prentup Field and Pleasant View Soccer Complex. MU has won the past seven meetings in the series with CU's last victory coming in 2005 so a lot is on the line Saturday as the Buffs try to snap that streak in addition to renewing the old rivalry.
The 2018 version of Missouri is off to a 1-0-1 start, settling for a scoreless draw with Iowa on the road to open the season before earning a 2-1, double-overtime win at Iowa State. Freshman Skye Kingsley holds Mizzou's only goal scored this season as the game-winner at ISU was an own goal. Goalkeepers Mercedes Sapp (RSo.) and Kelsey Dossey (Sr.) split the two games in goal, combining to make 15 saves. Sapp played at Iowa, earning a clean sheet in her first career start.
Missouri's top returner has yet to register a goal as Sarah Luebbert is a two-time second-team All-SEC pick and has 17 goals heading into her junior season. She scored the game winner in overtime against CU in Columbia in 2016.
Like CU, the Tigers have left the Big 12, heading to the SEC. They also have a CU connection as former Buffs assistant coach Don Trentham is an associate head coach for Mizzou.
