Barton's Hat Trick Lifts CU To 6-0 Win Over Missouri
August 25, 2018 | Soccer
Barton, making her first start of the season, scored twice in the first five minutes, the second-earliest a CU player has had two goals in history. She added her third score in the 57th minute.
Jorian Baucom, Marty Puketapu and Katie Joella also scored in the game and junior Taylor Kornieck broke the single-game record for the Buffs with four assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Barton put CU up 1-0 in the third minute off a corner kick. Kornieck headed the ball to the center of the box and freshman Jesse Loren then headed the ball to Barton inside the six-yard box and Barton turned and fired into the lower-right corner of the net.
Just two minutes later, Kornieck found a wide-open Barton streaking into the box and Barton dribbled past the goalkeeper and calmly finished into the net for the early 2-0 lead.
In the seventh minute, the Buffs pushed the lead to 3-0. Baucom scored on a sliding, one-touch shot in the box after a ball into the box from Megan Massey.
The score remained 3-0 through halftime, but Barton made it a 4-0 lead in the 57th minute on perhaps the most impressive play of the day. Kornieck played a ball from midfield up to Baucom near the top of the box. Baucom's first touch chipped the goalkeeper, but was headed out toward the endline. Baucom raced up to slide-touch the ball back to the center of the box before it went out, and Barton blasted the one-touch shot high into the net from the six-yard box.
Puketapu got into the scoring column in the 73rd minute. Scout Watson's goal kick was headed forward by Kornieck from midfield and Puketapu had a breakaway with the goalkeeper, beating her in the center of the box to the left and then tapping the ball into the net.
Joella finished the scoring in the 86th minute, chipping the goalkeeper from the center of the box after Emily Groark and Puketapu combined in the midfield to get Joella one-on-one with the keeper.
KEY STATISTICS: CU dominated from the start and outshot the Tigers 16-5, allowing just three shots on goal. Watson and starting goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins stopped all three of those shots for CU's third straight shutout.
The Buffs finished the day with a school record 22 points, scoring six goals and recording a school record 10 assists. The previous record were 20 points (vs. Texas Tech in 2004 and at Denver in 2017) and six assists (six times, most recently at Denver in 2017).
NOTES: Barton's hat trick was the sixth in CU history (first since Puketapu vs. UC Riverside last season) ... Kornieck's third career multi-assist game and she broke the school record for assists in a game with four (Jen Thais vs. Oklahoma in 2004 and Madison Krauser vs. Tennessee-Martin in 2013 each had three) ... Barton's two goals in the first 4:56 were the second-earliest two goals scored by the same player at CU (Nikki Marshall scored two in 2:36 vs. St. Mary's in 2009) ... the 3-0 lead for CU at 6:41 was the second-earliest 3-0 lead in school history behind St. Mary's in 2009 (4:05 in that game) ... Kornieck moved into the top 10 at CU for career assists with 12 ... 13th time CU has had five or more goals in a game ... CU broke the school record for points with 22 (previous was 20 vs. Texas Tech in 2004 and at Denver in 2017) and also broke the record for assists with 10 (previous was six, six times, most recently at Denver in 2017).
UP NEXT: CU will host UTSA at 4 p.m. on Friday.
POSTGAME QUOTES:
Danny Sanchez, head coach
On Tatum Barton's explosive performance
"I think she's been playing really well. She scored a great goal against Air Force right off the bat and she's been training really well. We have a lot of quality in our attack, just because you start today doesn't mean you get to start next game. Getting that early goal really took the pressure off of us and put Missouri on their heels a little bit. That was really the key to the match. Once you do that, you want to build momentum off of it."
On the team scoring today versus the game against Colorado State (a scoreless draw last weekend)
"It's soccer. We've been on both sides of it where you dominate and you get a result or you get dominated and don't get a result. It's just the nature of the game. If you stick to the course and the plan throughout the season it will usually work out. Fortunately, today I don't know if it was really a 6-0 game but we were very efficient in the final third. I don't know if we had any more chances than we did last Sunday, but we scored today. Hopefully that will help our confidence going forward."
On Taylor Kornieck breaking CU's single game assist record
"She's fantastic. She's a player that people key on. I thought she had a fantastic match."
On J.J. Tompkins and Scout Watkins working together
"They train really hard with Jason (Green). I think a lot of stuff that they work on like communication and distribution has helped. There's no sense in trying to make a save if you don't need to make a save. We know that they're going to face more down the road so we're very confident in both of them."
On the importance of the early goals in regards to the tie with Colorado State
"Getting that early goal allowed everyone to relax. Sometimes when you place a match on a Sunday you want to play again on Monday. We had a full week and started watching games on Thursday night and Friday night to get to this point."
Tatum Barton, junior
On starting today's match
"Just keep working hard and finding the net is probably my best chance to keep in the starting lineup. Danny knows what he's doing, and all the forwards are good, so I have no issues with coming off the bench or starting. I'm just going to play hard."
On the team getting good finishes off a scoreless game last week
"I think it set the tone for the rest of the season. Mizzou is a top team, so it was a really good week for us."
On Kornieck's four assists and playing with a player who consistently sets up her team
"She definitely helped me get my hat trick today and I just love playing with her. She's such a good player."
On being used at CU to put up big numbers as opposed to freshman season at Tech with no goals after 20 games
"The coaching staff here is really good. They've helped me find myself again and my confidence. I think I've developed a lot more being at CU than my freshman year at Tech."
Taylor Kornieck, junior
On how she feels about setting CU school record
"I feel pretty great, I didn't even realize. I feel great and I'm just going to keep going."
On CU's change in offense since CSU game
"I think we just prepared differently. I think we were all ready to go in the locker room, we were all pumped up and we just knew what we had to do."
On how Barton's hat trick affected the team
"I'm glad for her. It's her first start of the season, so she is stepping up and she is playing a really important role."
