Kornieck And Barton Score In Black & Gold Scrimmage
August 05, 2018 | Soccer
Over 50 kids participated in pregame clinic
BOULDER – Colorado's soccer team held its Black & Gold Scrimmage on Sunday at Prentup Field, in conjunction with a kids clinic and other festivities planned for fans and supporters of the program before the start of the season.
Head coach Danny Sanchez split the squad up into two teams and they played three 30-minute periods, with players changing sides in each period to mix up lineups.
Taylor Kornieck and Tatum Barton scored goals as the Black and Gold teams finished with a 1-1 draw. Jalen Tompkins made seven saves and allowed a pair of scores. Scout Watson stopped all four shots she faced as each goalkeeper defended the same goal the entire day.
Kornieck converted a penalty kick in the eighth minute for Team Black after Marty Puketapu was fouled in the box. Barton found the net in the 60th minute to tie the score for Team Gold, tapping in the rebound after Tompkins made a diving save on the initial shot by Jorian Baucom, who finished the day with team-high four shots on goal and another that hit the post.
All 25 players on CU's roster played in the scrimmage, in addition to alumnae Bianca Jones and Morgan Stanton.
Over 50 kids attended the clinic prior to the scrimmage and nearly 200 fans were around for the competition.
CU will continue its two-a-day practices this week with Tuesday as an off-day.
The Buffs open the season on Thursday, Aug. 16, at Air Force, and play their home opener at Prentup Field on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 3:30 p.m. against Colorado State.
Quotes from head coach Danny Sanchez:
"It was good to get out and play today. I thought the first 30 minutes, it was high-energy, players were moving off the ball, and it was good intensity. It felt like a real game. I think the second 30 was good and I think the last 30 you could see it was still preseason. It started to fade off a little bit. But overall, pleased with the performance today and it was especially important for the new players and the players that haven't played here before to just get a feel for a game-day atmosphere. I want to really thank all the people that came out today. The clinic was awesome and the fans that stuck around—it was a nice crowd and we hope to see them back on August 19th when we host Colorado State."
