#NFLBuffs: Phillip Lindsay Stars For Broncos In Week 1

September 12, 2018 | Football

Nine former Colorado Buffaloes took the field in week 1 of the NFL over the weekend. Phillip Lindsay, Chidobe Awuzie and David Bakhtiari headline this week's action.

Weekly Spotlight
Phillip Lindsay – Broncos Running Back #30
Lindsay impressed in his NFL debut, as the school's all-time leader in all-purpose yards totaled over 100 in Week 1. He scored the Broncos first touchdown of the season, when he took a screen pass from QB Case Keenum 29 yards for a score. In doing so, Lindsay became the first Bronco in a decade (Eddie Royal vs. Oakland, 2008) to score on their first NFL reception.

A first-quarter touchdown was far from Lindsay's only contribution to the Broncos 27-24 win over Seattle. He rushed for 71 yards on 15 carries, picking up several first downs on the ground. Lindsay also made one of the plays of the game after an interception, when he sprinted to catch Seahawk's FS Earl Thomas from behind at the 15-yard line to save a touchdown.

Lindsay has been nominated for NFL Rookie of the Week following his Week 1 performance. Not only is Lindsay the only undrafted rookie to be nominated in Week 1, he's the only one that wasn't drafted in the first round.

Chidobe Awuzie – Cowboys Cornerback #24
Awuzie entered the Cowboys' Week 1 game with his status in question after being limited in practice because of a back injury, but Awuzie battled through the pain to play the third most defensive snaps on the team with 66 (two players had 67). He recorded four solo tackles and forced a fumble that the defense failed to recover. Despite the team's offensive struggles, Awuzie helped Dallas limit Panthers' QB Cam Newton to just 161 passing yards, no passing touchdowns and a 52.6 QBR.

David Bakhtiari – Packers Tackle #69
Bakhtiari helped the Packers pull off a seemingly impossible victory during Week 1, coming from down 20-0 to win 24-23 over Chicago. He was part of a Green Bay offensive line that did not give up a sack in the second half, and while the Bears had four sacks in the first half, none came on Bakhtiari's watch. On Monday, Pro Football Focus selected Bakhtiari as the left tackle for their Week 1 All-NFL team (though he was replaced by Rams LT Andrew Whitworth following the Monday Night games.)

Other Notable Performances
Paul Richardson had four receptions for 22 yards in his first game with the Washington Redskins, a 24-6 win over the Cardinals.

Mason Crosby made his only field goal attempt, a 42-yarder that was Green Bay's first points in a spectacular comeback. He was also 3-of-3 on PAT attempts.

Ahkello Witherspoon started at cornerback for the 49ers in Week 1 and recorded one tackle and one pass deflection in a loss to Minnesota.

Tedric Thompson made four tackles (three solo) in Week 1 as the Seahawks lost to the Broncos.

Ken Crawley recorded four tackles as the Saints lost to the Buccaneers.

In his first game with the New York Giants, Nate Solder started at left tackle and played all 71 offensive snaps.

Rookie second-round pick Isaiah Oliver missed the Falcons Thursday night game against the Eagles in Week 1 due to an ankle injury.
