Buffs Roll To 3-1 Win Over Iowa State

September 02, 2018 | Soccer

BOULDER – For the second straight game, Colorado scored in the first five minutes as the Buffs cruised to a 3-1 win over Iowa State on Sunday at Prentup Field. CU improved to 4-0-1 this season, while ISU dropped to 1-4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Taylor Kornieck got the Buffs on the board in the fourth minute with a volley off a free kick by Kelsey Aaknes. Kornieck received the long ball in the box, tapped it up in the air, and blasted it through the hands of goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg.

CU took a 2-0 lead in the ninth minute as Jorian Baucom scored her third goal of the year. She took a pass from Tatum Barton in the box with her back to the goal, turned to her left and dribbled around a defender to fired it towards the far post.

Jalen Tompkins made one of her best saves of the season in the 39th minute, stopping a breakaway with a point-blank kick save. It was one of four stops by her on the day.

Freshman Jesse Loren opened her CU account with her first career goal in the 60th minute. She headed in a corner kick from fellow freshman Emily Groark to push the lead to 3-0.

CU allowed its first goal of the season in the 89th minute. A failed clearance from the box landed at the feet of ISU's Emily Steil and she pushed the ball up to Klasey Medelberg, who had a 1v1 with Tompkins and scored.

KEY STATISTICS: Colorado outshot Iowa State 18-9 in the game and had a 9-3 advantage on corner kicks. The Buffs also had nine shots on goal.

NOTES: It was the fifth time in CU history that the Buffs have scored two or more times in the first 10 minutes and first time CU has done that in back-to-back games ... Baucom has now scored in back-to-back games ... Kornieck's goal was the 20th of her career and she ranks seventh in CU history in goals scored ... Loren's goal was the first of her career.

UP NEXT: CU hits the road to play at Marquette at 6 p.m. MT on Thursday.

POSTGAME QUOTES:
Danny Sanchez, head coach
General
"I thought we came out great. I thought the first 30 minutes might have been some of the best 30 minutes we have played all year. Not just scoring the two goals but our movement in the attack, solid in the back. I was really pleased with that. I felt towards the end of the first half we got a little loose with the ball. Iowa State had a great chance and [GK] JJ (Jalen Tompkins) made a great save to keep it two to zero at the half. I think the second half, we managed the game. We played a lot of players and moved some people around. It was a very good goal from [D] Jesse (Loren) to kind of shut the door. Iowa State was putting a lot of pressure on us. Credit to them, they are well coached. They got a well-deserved goal at the end. Like I told the team, we are going to give up goals. We are pleased to get the win over a very good Big 12 team and now we are excited to get out to Marquette and Michigan State next week."

On facing Marquette next
"We know their quality. If you look at who they have played so far, there is no shame. They have been right in ever game. I don't know what the result was today but they are going to be at home and they are going to be hungry. They have been on the road a lot. They were in California. They were in North Carolina. They have been all over the place. We are going to have to play well. We are going to have to play like we did in the first 30 minutes if we are going to get a result."

On another fast scoring start
"It was a great service from [D] Kelsey (Aaknes) to [M] Taylor (Kornieck) and she kind of bottled around. We have to be aggressive in the box. Sometimes it's not the prettiest goal but we'll take it. I thought the second goal was great. [F] Tatum (Barton) had a nice reverse pass to [F] Jorian (Baucom) and a nice finish from her. I thought we took the foot off the gas a little bit but we are still playing well. The movement, the energy, and the combination play was excellent in that first stretch."

On effective set pieces
"We have options. It is really about the service. I thought the service from [M] Emily (Groark) on Jesse's and the serve from [D] Kelsey (Aaknes) on Taylor's was key. You can be a great player but if you don't get the service, it doesn't really matter. I thought the service on set pieces and corners were very good today."

On the strength of the defense
"I think going into our sixth or seventh game of the season last season, we hadn't given up a goal and it was like the world ended. It is part of the game. We could've gave one up in the first half if JJ didn't make the save. If you are going to give one up, maybe that's the time to do it with a minute left when you are up three to nothing. I'll have to look at the film to see what happened. the big picture, we had a couple opportunities to clear the ball and we didn't. When you have a team that is hungry, scrapping, and fighting until the end, you are going to give up those chances. I'm a little disappointed from that side but I am not going to let it take away from the other 89 minutes of the game that I thought we were very good."

On the performance of freshmen [D] Kayleigh Webb and Jesse Loren at centerback
"I thought they were both fantastic not just because Jesse scored but I thought Kayleigh was very composed and made good decisions. Sometimes when you aren't under pressure all of the time, you can relax but I thought mentally she stayed in it. I thought our distribution from the back was very good and obviously we saw Jesse's quality going forward."

Jesse Loren, freshman
On today's personal performance
"I think I could have definitely done better but I think I helped the team a little bit today and helped move the ball around. It was okay."

On using strong defense in the first half to become more aggressive on offense in second half
"It's definitely very motivating when you win the ball as a defensive player and just get it forward so that kind of helped winning those balls in the air or cutting off passes. It definitely helped us with momentum forward."

On team accomplishments for the season
"We can reach anything. I'm hoping on a Pac-12 champs win, and to go as far as we can in the NCAA tournament. I think that's our goal right now just to stay healthy, to keep improving our game and to keep going and winning games."

On developing further as a player
"I think I can play quicker with the ball and be in better defensive shape in the back and just keep talking throughout the games. I think would help."

On scoring first career goal
"It was very exciting. I was definitely waiting for that to happen, just excited that it happened today."

On defense today as a whole
"I think we did well today. I didn't get to see the goal that was scored on us, but I definitely know that our shape in the back is doing really well and that we have good movement in the back offensively and defensively, so that's really good."
