September 27, 2018 | Soccer
Buffs and Sun Devils play to 1-1 draw
TEMPE, Ariz.— The No. 18 Colorado women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at Arizona State on Thursday. The Buffs pick up a point in the standings and remain unbeaten on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Colorado (9-0-2, 1-0-1), just as it has all season, initiated the offense early. The Buffs pressured Arizona State early, registering four shots in the first 14 minutes.
Senior Jorian Baucom cashed in for the Buffs in the 14th minute. She took the feed from freshman Emily Groark down the left side of the box and dribbled to seven yards out. Baucom mixed up the ASU defender and struck the ball with a solid right-foot back across the net, beating ASU keeper Nikki Panas.
Possession back and forth the rest of the half. CU totaled three more shots the rest of the half. Meanwhile, Arizona State picked up its play, totaling nine of its 11 first-half shots after the Colorado goal. CU goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins kept the Buffs in the lead, matching her season-high with four saves in the first 45 minutes.
The Sun Devils (6-2-1, 1-0-1) jumped out quickly in the second half. ASU used three early corner kicks to help control the tempo. Madison Wolf scored the equalizer in the 52nd minute, capitalizing off the third corner kick.
Both teams continued to battle each other and the 100-degree heat for the remainder of the game. Arizona State outshot Colorado 22-15 at the end of regulation. Tompkins came up clutch for CU, making five more saves in the second half.
ASU got the first good chance in overtime. A Sun Devil corner caused a scramble in front of the CU net. Colorado's defense stepped up and cleared the ball to safety from just off the goal line. The Buffs went right back down the field and got a look from Baucom that went high.
Tompkins made the save of the game in the in the 109th minute. She came off the goal line to cut down the angle on ASU's shot. The ball deflected off the foot of a Colorado defender, forcing Tompkins to change direction. She batted the ball up and recovered the rebound directly in front of a waiting Sun Devil inside the six.
Colorado outshot Arizona State in the two overtime periods but was outgunned 28-22 in the game.
KEY STATISTICS: Tompkins played the entire game for the first time in four games. She made eight of her 12 saves after the first half. The 12 saves tied her career high set back at Missouri in 2016.

On overall performance
"I thought we started well. We were pressing them high up the field and winning the ball in good spots. One of those times Emily [Groark] played Jorian [Baucom] in and scored to go up 1-0. I felt the rest of the first half was pretty even. The start of the second half we got under some pressure. Unfortunately, we gave up the goal on the corner. After that, we made some tactical adjustments and the game evened out. I think the fans that watched the game could see that it was really stretched because of the playing conditions. Both teams were going for the three points and a draw is probably a fair result."
On the play of Jalen Tompkins and the defense
"She kept us in the game. Like I said, the game was stretched. It almost became like half-court basketball. There just was not a lot of midfield defending by either team. She did a great job. I told the team I was super proud of them because of the way they kept competing. Players like Kelsey [Aaknes] who was out after Oregon State came in and gave us big minutes. Erin Greening had been out for eight games and I thought she was fantastic. Jesse [Loren] and Kayleigh [Webb] were solid in the back. I was really pleased with the back four, Sofia Weiner as well. We just needed that one final ball and it just did not go our way in the final third."
On moving on to Arizona
"I think we can take a lot of positives from today. When you go on the road and in different conditions and different place, playing a team that is coming off a big road win—you have to take positives from that. Every Pac-12 game is going to be like this. It is all about recovery. We need to quickly recover and get our mind and bodies ready for a tough Arizona team on Sunday."
