O'Loughlin Finishes Ninth In Medalist Race

ALBUQUERQUE — The University of Colorado men's golf team closed out its fourth tournament in the month of September here Saturday with a seventh place finish in the University of New Mexico's William H. Tucker Intercollegiate.

BYU overtook first day leader UNLV to capture the team title, winning with a 16-under 848 score; the Rebels wound up two behind at 850.  Pepperdine and Arkansas held their positions of third (851) and fourth (860), respectively, while host New Mexico rounded out the top five with a 1-under 863.

Colorado essentially got off to a poor start and dropped from fifth entering Saturday's play into seventh; the Buffs turned in an 8-over 296 and finished at 6-over 870.

Junior Daniel O'Loughlin led the Buffalo effort here as he finished ninth with a 2-under 214 total.  He struggled to a 76 in the final round on the 7,555-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Course layout.  He played the par-5 holes here (12 in all) at 8-under par, tied for third-best in the 100-man field.

Freshman Kristoffer Max added a second top 20 finish for CU, as he closed with an even-par 72 that enabled him to post a 1-over 217 score, tying him for 19th.

Sophomore Trevor Olkowski recorded CU's best effort of the day – a 1-under 71 – and that enabled him to tie for 25th with a 2-over 218 total.  He had four birdies, 12 pars, a bogey and a double en route to his score, with his 39 pars for the two days the third-most in the field.

Junior Ross Macdonald and another CU frosh, John Paterson, tied for 55th, as they too had their struggles and posted in the upper 70s.  MacDonald closed with a 5-over 77 and Paterson with a 6-over 78, and in the end, the pair tied for 55th with 8-over par 224 scores.

Junior Andre Leveque competed here as an individual (his scores did not count toward the CU team total); he was in position for a top 10 or 20 finish as he was eighth entering the final round, but a final round 76 (4-over) dropped him into a tie for 25th with Olkowski.

"The guys fought hard all day especially after a difficult start," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "Trevor and Kristoffer had good rounds.  Ross got back in the round as well.  Overall it was a missed opportunity. We were out of position way too much the last 20-22 holes and it cost us a chance to finish higher or perhaps win. I really like our competitiveness, however, and that will serve us well the rest of the year."

The Buffs' five designated scorers open 14-over par between them on their first five holes before settling down and working to get the team score for the day back to an 8-over 296.

"I am very encouraged about the progress the team has made in the short period of time since the season has started," Edwards added.

UNLV's Harry Hall and BYU's Peter Kuest shared medalist honors, as each finished with 11-under par 205 scores; Kuest was two back heading into Saturday but caught Hall by shooting a 4-under 68.

The Buffaloes have one more tournament left on their fall schedule, that being the University of Denver's Paintbrush Invitational, scheduled for Oct. 8-9 at Colorado Golf Club.
