Oleynik Finishes Perfect Day To Lead Buffs At Home Tournament

September 30, 2018 | Tennis

BOULDER – Colorado's tennis team wrapped up its first tournament of the season on Sunday, going 4-3 in singles matches and 2-0 in doubles play at the CU Invitational at CU's South Campus Tennis Complex.

SINGLES: Ilana Oleynik had a perfect day in two matches, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Northern Colorado's Sarina Chhabra and 8-0 in a pro set against UNC's Elisabeth Walsh. Brigitte Beck breezed to a 6-3, 6-2 win over UNC's Synclair Larson and Monica Malinen picked up the other win for the Buffs in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 over UNC's Madeline Doherty.

All three of CU's losses were three-set battles.

DOUBLES: The Buffs earned two more victories in doubles as Malinen and Vera Markovic won 6-2 over USD's Gemma Garcia and Maria Tyrina, and Beck and Ky Ecton won 6-3 over UNC's Chhabra and Larson.

UP NEXT: CU is set to compete at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships in Las Vegas starting on Wednesday, Oct. 10.

POSTMATCH QUOTES:
Danielle Steinberg, head coach
On the team's play on Sunday
"I think we've seen improvements from yesterday. Yesterday we talked specifically with each player and what we wanted to see better today and I think almost everyone was able to do that. Overall, I think we're not consistent enough in doing that yet and I think that's a matter of practice and playing a lot of matches. We've seen what we want to see in some moments in matches, but not throughout and the players know that and that's just what we need to work on right now. That's getting stronger physically and getting stronger mentally and knowing what you need to do for a full three sets."

On the team's doubles play this weekend
"We just talked about energy and going to each other, running for each other and being loud. They brought that and that's really the basis of doubles. Obviously, we've got a lot to work on still, but if naturally some of the players are good doubles players as far as volleys and movements, once you add the coherence and energy, then doubles looks good. I'm happy where we're starting because I think we can be a very good doubles team.

On the play of the individuals on Sunday
"I think everyone had ups and downs this weekend. I think if we look at Ilana and Brigitte from yesterday, they had some tough matches and tough losses. They didn't really feel good and both weren't happy with their match. Both of them came out today and were able to make adjustments, attitude adjustments and the way they played with strategy. Both of them came out strong and won convincingly. I think the top draws, if you look at Megan and Vera, two tough matches yesterday and today, three setters. They didn't come out winning, but definitely improved. Megan today played a very good player and in the first set we saw that she can compete against the very best in the country. She's just not fit enough yet to do that for three sets, but I think that shows a lot of potential and I was happy to see that."

Brigitte Beck, senior
On the first tournament of the season
"I think it was a great start. Overall, I think the team played really well this weekend. First day, we came out and got six out of six for singles wins, did really good in doubles. It's bittersweet for me because it's my last CU Invite, but I'm really glad that it started off like this."

On her play on Sunday
"I was a little bit nervous coming out just because I had a tough match yesterday, but I worked on some things that Danielle said I should work on and I think I executed that and came through with a win. I found a way to get through it today, which I was really happy about."

On the team's play
"The team did great. We have four new girls this year playing their first CU event so they kicked those nerves in the butt and just did really well. We had Annabelle [Andrinopoulos] out here for her first match in the last nine months (she played a scrimmage in doubles on Sunday after missing most of 2018 with an injury). She did really well, didn't lose a game today, so that was awesome. We've got a really strong team this year and I'm excited to see where we can maybe take it."
