Buffaloes One Shot Out Of The Lead
USAFA, Colo. — The University of Colorado men's golf team opened its fall season here Friday, ending the first round of the year tied for second place in the 50th annual Gene Miranda-Air Force Falcon Invitational.
The Buffaloes turned in a 3-under par score of 285, the third straight year and the eighth time in school history CU has opened with a team score under par. New Mexico State owns the lead with a four-under 284, while Weber State matched CU's score. UC Davis is in fourth (286) and defending tournament champion Wyoming rounds out the top five at 287.
Eight Buffs are competing here, three as individuals, and all posted scores between 70 and 75 on the 7,511-yard, par-72 Eisenhower Blue Golf Course layout.
Sophomore Daniel O'Loughlin turned in CU's low score for the day, a 2-under 70, that has him tied for seventh individually. He recorded three birdies and 14 pars with just one bogey, continuing what he started in his first season as a Buff last year when he finished second on the team in scoring average with a 71.54 mark.
Junior Victor Bjorlow and sophomore Trevor Olkowski each posted 1-under par 71 totals, getting there in the same manner with three birdies and 13 pars with just two bogeys; both are tied for 10th place. Olkowski played the par-3s at 2-under par, tied for the best among the 91 players competing here, and finished strong with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18.
Freshman John Paterson had a 1-over 73, which has him tied for 33rd; he had one of just four eagles in the field on Friday to go with one birdie and 12 pars.
Junior Ross Macdonald completed CU's five earmarked scorers with a 2-over 74 (tied for 47th), fashioning one birdie and 14 pars during his round.
Sophomore Cole Krantz paced the trio of CU individuals, as he carded a 1-under 71; he had three birdies and 13 pars. Senior Wilson Belk turned in a 1-over 73 (two birdies, 13 pars) and freshman Kris Max recorded a 3-over 75 (one birdie, 13 pars).
"I saw a lot of good things today," CU head coach Roy Edwards said after witnessing the start of his 13th season at the reins of the program. "We had some nice rounds and nice finishes, especially Trevor who had a rough start. Daniel put up a solid score and Cole had a nice round competing as an individual.
"The thing that was good is that all the guys were playing hard," Edwards added. "We didn't play our best, so shooting three-under is something we're pleased about. The newcomers were a little nervous, but they did a nice job of hanging in and managing their games. This is a difficult golf course to play your first couple of collegiate rounds on."
New Mexico State has the top two individual performances Friday, with Tadhg Campbell firing a tourney best 5-under 67, with his teammate Mike McGilton carding a 4-under 68. Six players shot in the 60s overall, 20 bested par with another 12 matching it.
