Colorado Drops First Leg of Road Trip

January 11, 2019 | Women's Basketball

CU falls 68-58

SEATTLE – A slow start for the Colorado women's basketball team proved to be too much to overcome on Friday. The Buffaloes got down early and were unable to mount a comeback, falling 68-58 to Washington.

The loss drops Colorado to 0-4 in the Pac-12 and 10-5 overall. Washington improves to 8-8 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.

Washington scored 27 points in the first quarter and led by as many as 15 in the first half. Colorado, playing without Kennedy Leonard, cut the UW lead down to six late in the second quarter. Washington closed the half on a 5-0 run to go back up by double-digits, 39-28, at the half.

With Leonard unavailable, sophomore Peyton Carter and freshman Lesila Finau were leaned on.

"I was actually really proud of our freshman point guard [Finau]," head coach JR Payne explained. "For the first time all year she played a lot. We did not just lose our point guard tonight we lost 13 points and 7.5 assists. It is not just the position, but she [Leonard] is somebody that has contributed in every aspect of the game for many years."

The Buffs offense had nine first-half turnovers, resulting in 12 points for the Huskies. Washington pushed the pace with 10 fast-break points in the half.

Junior Quinessa Caylao-Do hit a 3-pointer to open the half and CU cut the lead back down to six, 39-33 in the first two minutes. But Washington continued to press, getting the lead back up to 14. UW maintained a double-digit lead through the fourth quarter. Lesila Finau hit a late 3 cut the Huskie to 10, 66-56.

Caylao-Do helped pace the Buffs with 13 points in her homecoming. The Tacoma, Wash., native went 4-of-9 from the field with four assists. Sophomore Mya Hollingshed posted 13 points to go with her seven rebounds. Senior Alexis Robinson put in 11 points on 5-of-16 shooting. Finau played a season-high 30 minutes, scoring nine points.

Washington's Amber Melgoza led the Huskies with 15 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Washington started 3-of-4 from the field to jump out to a 6-0 lead in the game's first 90 seconds. The Huskies pushed their lead to 17-3 before Finau hit CU's first field goal of the game at the 4:53 mark. The Huskies offense was tough to stop in the opening 10 minutes, hitting 57.9 percent (11-19) in the quarter.

The deficit for Colorado grew to 15 in the first minute of the second quarter. Quick by the Buffs cut the Washington lead to single digits. Each time Washington was able to bounce back. Finau scored four straight points for Colorado to cut the Washington lead to six, 34-28, with 2:31 to go in the half but that would be as close as they would get.

Colorado outscored Washington in the fourth quarter, 18-15. Hollingshed did the bulk of the scoring in the period, totaling seven points on 2-of-2 shooting.

TURNING POINT: Annika Jank got CU within nine points (21-12) at the 1:21 mark of the 1st quarter. Washington came right back with a pair of 3's to close the quarter on a 6-2 run. Melgoza's jumper increased the run to 8-2, putting CU in a 15-point hole.

WHAT IT MEANS: The Buffs and Southern California are the only two teams still looking for their first conference win.

KEY STATISTICS: Washington's 27 points in the first quarter were the most allowed by the Buffs this season…the Huskies scored 17 points off 13 Colorado turnovers.

NOTEWORTHY: Senior Kennedy Leonard missed her first career game…she had started 100 consecutive contests…Robinson moved into 28th on CU's all-time scoring list (1,090)…CU's 13-point deficit after the 1st quarter was its largest of the season…Colorado's 58 points tied for the fewest this season.

QUOTEWORTHY: "I think we need to see what worked. We will go through this film pretty extensively and show them the solid offensive possessions that we had. They were not passive possessions. They were good solid, clean, aggressive basketball in the half-court." - CU's JR Payne

"You just have to make sure you do your role as effective as you can." – CU's Quinessa Caylao-Do

NEXT UP: CU continues on the road on Sunday at Washington State. The Cougars are 1-3 in the Pac-12 this season, coming off a 72-68 loss to Utah on Friday.
