Senior Alexis Robinson leads the way with 24 points
SALT LAKE CITY – Colorado's first Pac-12 win continued to elude the Buffaloes women's basketball team on Friday. CU dropped its sixth consecutive game, a 78-59 defeat to Utah inside the Huntsman Center.
The Buffs move to 10-7 overall and 0-6 in the Pac-12. Utah climbs to 5-1 in the conference and 16-1 overall.
Much like the first meeting between the teams in Boulder, Utah's recipe for success was its ability to hit from long distance early on. The Utes hit 8-of-11 from 3-point range in the first half, matching its first half in Boulder. Megan Huff and Sarah Porter each went 2-for-2 in the half, helping the Utes outscore the Buffs 24-9 from long range.
"It [3-point shooting] took the air out of our sails," head coach JR Payne explained. "We were focusing on Huff and Edwards because they have been their strongest players the last few weeks. With that being said, we can't just leave shooters [open] when they have a lot of good shooters on their team."
The Buffs got down by as many as 15 in the first half. Colorado struggled with its ball control in the first quarter. The Utes converted six CU turnovers into 13 points. Colorado settled down in the second quarter, only turning the ball over once before the half.
Utah increased its lead from 23-15 to 31-16 in the first two minutes of the second quarter. The Utes lead continued to grow, gaining the 15-point lead (36-21) midway through the period. Colorado, led by Alexis Robinson's seven points, went on a 13-2 run to cut the deficit to four (38-34) before the half.
The Utes closed the second quarter with the final five points, taking a 43-34 lead at the break.
Colorado, we held to 35.7 percent shooting (10-128) in the second half, as Utah continued to grow its lead. The Buffs found themselves down by as many as 19 in the final 20 minutes.
Robinson and Quinessa Caylao-Do provided a bulk of the Colorado offense. Robinson scored a season-high 24 points, shooting 9-of-28. Caylao-Do added 19 points and three assists.
Utah had four players in double figures, led by Huff's 17. Andrea Torres led the Utes with seven rebounds to go with her 14 points off the bench.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The contest was tight in the game's first five minutes. The two sides played to early ties, leading up to an 8-8 line. Utah outscored Colorado 15-8 the rest of the quarter, taking a 23-15 lead.
The Utes hit two quick 3's and started 3-for-3 from the floor to open the second in their 8-1 start to the quarter. Utah was perfect from 3-point range, going 4-for-4 in the period. The Buffs fought tough in the quarter, hitting 47.1 percent (8-17), keeping within nine points at the half.
Colorado was limited to just 5-of-14 from the field in the third quarter. Robinson and Caylao-Do were held in check by the Utes, totaling a combined seven points.
Robinson scored eight of CU's 14 fourth-quarter points and Caylao-Do added four more in the period. Defensively, Colorado held Utah to 17 points on 5-of-13 shooting.
TURNING POINT: Utah's 15-point hole proved to be too much for CU to overcome. The Buffs chipped away, getting to within four points before the half. Utah would close the half on a 5-0 run, to go up nine (43-34). The Utes outscored CU 11-4 in the first five minutes to grow the lead to 16, 54-38, putting Colorado's hopes of a comeback to rest.
NOTEWORTHY: Colorado was without senior Kennedy Leonard for the third consecutive games…she continues to be day-to-day…Colorado shot a season-high 88.9 percent from the free-throw line…Utah's 78 points were the most allowed by CU this season…Colorado's seven assists tied for the fewest this season (Arizona State)...Robinson moved into 24 on CU's scoring list with 1,118 career points.
WHAT IT MEANS: Colorado enters its toughest stretch of the season still in search of its first Pac-12 win. The three of the next four opponents for the Buffs are all ranked in the top-25, starting with No. 6/7 Stanford next Friday (Jan. 25).
QUOTEWORTHY: "We continued to fight and compete. It's hard to win when you get down 15 against a good basketball team." – CU's JR Payne
"We were just trying to figure out who was going to be aggressive offensively, guard the basketball on defense and who was going to rebound. We have some work to do where we can get people to do all three." - CU's JR Payne
NEXT UP: Colorado will return home on Friday, Jan. 25. The Buffs will take on No. 6/7 Stanford before hosting California on Sunday.
