Buffaloes Finish Seventh At the Molly Collegiate Invitational
October 01, 2019 | Women's Golf
PORTLAND, Ore. — The University of Colorado women's golf team recorded too many bogeys on the second day of action at Molly Collegiate Invitational Tuesday and dropped one position to seventh.
Â
The Buffs ended the tournament with a 44-over 908 after shooting a 16-over 304 in the final round.Â
Â
"Bits and pieces are coming together for the team, but we need to get everyone playing well at the same time," head coach Anne Kelly said.
Â
Stanford won decisively, shooting a 4-under 860 on the 6,141-yard par 72 Waverley Country Club course. The Cardinal shot a 7-under 281 in the final round and finished 26 strokes in front of the runner-up, Oregon (886). Georgia placed third (892), San Diego State was fourth (895) and Oregon State finished fifth (897). Â
Â
Sophomore Alisha Lau had another strong round to lead the Buffs and finish tied for ninth overall. She carded a 74 on the final round and finished the tournament with a 6-over 222 (77-71-74). She played a very steady first nine with one bogey and eight pars. Her second nine did not go quite as well, but it was still a good showing. She made six pars and had two doubles, in addition to recording her only birdie of the day on her second to last hole. Â
Â
Freshman Sophie Johnson recorded another 2-over 74 in the third round to finish tied for 16th with a scorecard of 225 (78-73-74). She had some trouble on the front nine, recording three bogeys and one triple in addition to five pars, which put her at 5-over heading into the back nine. She sank a birdie on No. 1 and then made five straight pars before earning back-to-back birdies on No. 16 and No. 17. She finished the round making par on No. 18.
Â
"It was a tough week for our top two players, but they will bounce back," Kelly said. "Good news is we do have some depth. Sophie played some good golf this week and I'm really proud of Alisha. She has made such a good comeback from her injury and surgery last year. It's is difficult not to golf for a year and then get back to a competitive level; Alisha has worked very diligently on her recovery and getting her game back. It's nice to see her start having some success."
Â
Sophomore Malak Bouraeda did not have her best day on the course, but had a decent start to the round where she carded seven pars and two doubles. The back nine is where she has had some trouble. She recorded three consecutive pars before she tallied a pair of doubles and one bogey. She was 7-over when she was able to sink a birdie on No. 16. She finished the round with one more par and another bogey. She ended up tied for 28th at the tournament with a 14-over 230.
Â
Finishing fourth for Colorado was senior Kirsty Hodgkins. She had a very atypical tournament, recording a 6-over 78 on the final day of action. Her scorecard was a 16-over 232 (77-77-78), which tied her for 36th. CU's other team member was freshman Issy Simpson, who finished tied for 57th overall after recording a 26-over 242. Both recorded one birdie, 10 pars and seven bogeys in the final round.
Â
Playing as an individual, sophomore Kelsey Webster finished tied for 48th. She carded a 19-over 235. She recorded her best round of the tournament, a 4-over 76, during the final round of play.
Â
Stanford had the top three individuals in the tournament. Andrea Lee hung on for the win, shooting a 6-under 210 (71-69-70), while teammate Angelina Ye stayed at second (212). Albane Valenzuela moved up three spots to third (214).
Â
The Buffs will be back in action October 12-13 at the Betsy Rawls Invitational in Austin, Texas.
