Colorado Rebounds in Second Day of Husky Invite

SEATTLE – The University of Colorado women's tennis team finished the second day of competition at the Husky Invitational in Seattle Saturday with four singles victories.

The Buffs started the tournament slow with all five competitors losing on Friday in consecutive sets to members of the University of Washington. The all of the individuals fell in sets of 6-2 or less except for Antonia Balzert who competed hard with a 6-4 second set loss to Natsuho Arakawa.

Saturday was a turn around for Colorado as they won four of the five matches against opponents from the University of Idaho. Balzert defeated Laura Spataro 6-3, 6-2, while Sophia Derivan picked up her first win with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Melissa Huchet. The other freshman, Ellen Puzak, fell to former Buff Ilana Oleynik by a score of 6-3, 6-4.

For the sophomores, Farrow picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Maggie Chen, then Ky Ecton finished off Marta Magalhaes in three close sets. She won the first set 7-5, the lost the second by a score of 6-4. The won the third in a 6-4 decision.

In doubles play, the Buffs are still looking for their first victory. Derivan and Balzert teamed up and lost a pair to a squad from Oregon on Friday and Washington on Saturday that included one individual from the No.29 doubles team from Oregon. Ecton and Puzak fell as well to an Oregon squad by a score of 6-1.

Saturday's action against Washington squads saw the No.45 ranked team split individuals and conquering CU in both matches as Ecton joined with Farrow for the second day battle. Puzak joined up with an individual from Washington to take down a squad from Portland State in a close 7-6(4) win in exhibition doubles on Saturday.

Colorado returns to action tomorrow to close out the tournament. They are back in action in a couple of weeks in the ITA Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas, beginning Oct. 23.
