October 23, 2019 | Tennis
LAS VEGAS – Colorado tennis kicked off the 2019 Intercollegiate Mountain Regional Championships Wednesday with a clean sweep of five singles wins and a doubles win to advance everyone to the next round.
Â
Freshmen Antonia Balzert and Maria Campos started things off in strong fashion, sweeping the duo of Sachica and Daniels from UTEP by a score of 8-0. Sara Nayar and Monica Malinen earned the No.1 seed for the women's doubles tournament and were the only team to earn a bye in the first round, giving CU two teams in the round of 32 Thursday.
Â
In the singles first round, No.65 Nayar earned the fourth seed while teammate Malinen earned the seventh seed in the tournament. All five Buffaloes picked up first-round wins with four taking their win in two sets. Nayar took down Nadeen Lieberman of Air Force with a 6-4 opening set victory then surrendered a close 7-5 second set. In the third, Nayar was in command with a 6-3 win to advance to the next round.
Â
The other four matches went CU's way in consecutive sets and only one needing a tiebreaker. Undefeated freshman Campos continued on her hot streak with a 6-2 opening set against Kate Cusick of BYU and then had a close 7-6(3) victory in the second. Malinen picked up her first singles win of the season against Emily Luetschwager of CSU with a 6-4, 6-3 match. Balzert had a dominating performance against Erandi Martinez of UTEP with a 6-3 opening set and a 6-1 closing set.
