October 22, 2019 | Tennis

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team is back in action this week in the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Regional Championships in Las Vegas beginning Wednesday and running through Sunday.

The team will send five individuals including No.65 Sara Nayar, Monica Malinen, Sophia Derivan, Maria Campos and Antonia Balzert. Campos and Balzert will team up as a doubles duo while Nayar and Malinen will continue their fall season as the No.53-ranked duo after advancing to the third round of the ITA All-American Championships earlier in the month.

The Buffaloes are 13-25 in combined individual matches this fall and 6-9 in doubles matches. Nayar and Malinen are 3-2 this season and 2-2 against ranked doubles including a win against the No.4 and No.38 ranked pairs in the nation. The other doubles team of Campos and Balzert are 1-0 together with a close 7-6 win this season.

Individually, Nayar has had a tough season with a 1-4 record including 0-4 against ranked individuals. Her counterpart Malinen is looking for her first singles victory this fall after dropping her first three matches. For the freshmen, Campos is 3-0 after winning her bracket in the Rice Fall Invitational. Balzert is 3-3 this season and 7-6 in sets. Derivan made her debut at the Husky Invitational and went 1-2 including a loss to a ranked individual.

There will be more than 120 players from 20 different teams in action on 12 courts at the University of Las Vegas. Wednesday's first round will begin with doubles at 10 a.m. (MDT) followed by a round of singles.
