Nayar and Malinen Head to ITA All-American Tournament
October 04, 2019 | Tennis
BOULDER – Colorado women's tennis will send two stars to the ITA All-American Championships that begin this weekend and run throughout next week in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Â
Sara Nayar and Monica Malinen are the two heading to compete, with Nayar representing the Buffs as the No.65 ranked singles player and the duo ranked No.53 in doubles in the preseason.
Â
Malinen will begin the tournament Saturday in the prequalifying singles and will need three wins to advance to the qualifying draw where she will join Nayar. Both Buffs will need to win two rounds there to advance to the main draw.
Â
The tandem has been selected to compete directly in the main draw of doubles, beginning Wednesday. It is a long process, as prequalifying singles compete Saturday and Sunday, followed by the qualifying singles Monday and Tuesday. Every round will feature 64 of the best tennis players in then nation, including the doubles main draw that has 32 teams.
Â
Last weekend both Buffs started the season at the Rice Fall Tournament. Both struggled in the main tournament, dropping their first two matches in straight sets. Nayar fell to the No.96 and No.55 ranked players but picked up a win in extra matches against a Rice player 6-2, 6-4.
Â
In doubles play, the duo played a close first match against the No.39-ranked team from Rice but lost 6-4. They didn't play another match together until in extra matches where they throttled past a USF tandem 6-0.
Â
An event page featuring updated draws and results is being created and will be live Friday afternoon on itatennis.com.
