BOULDER — Colorado senior wide receiver Tony Brown continued to shine for the Buffaloes on Saturday despite a 35-30 loss to the Arizona Wildcats.
Brown was coming off a career game vs. Arizona State, when he had nine catches for 150 yards, seven first downs and three touchdowns, which tied the school record for most receiving touchdowns in a game.
Brown was once again the team's leading receiver Saturday with 10 receptions for 141 yards. On top of that, Brown he also had a 15-yard rushing touchdown on just the second carry of his college career. Asked about his touchdown run Brown said, "It's pretty fun. I wasn't really expecting a rushing touchdown, but I'll do what I can to contribute, do what I can to help the team out until I had to make a big play, and that's what I did."
Brown is from La Mirada, Calif., and played his first two years of college football at Texas Tech. Out of high school, Brown almost signed with Colorado, but it was former CU wide receiver and current CU Assistant Head Coach Darrin Chiaverini who convinced him to pick Texas Tech.
Chiaverini was previously a special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach at Texas Tech before accepting a coaching job at CU in 2016. Brown followed Chiaverini to Boulder a year later and was forced to sit out the whole 2017 season due to transfer rules. When Brown returned to play in 2018, he proved himself to be an important player on the roster, finishing third on the team in receptions (32) and yards (333).
Brown already has surpassed his 2018 receiving yards total of 333 yards with 442 through five games this season. He also already has four more touchdowns in 2019 than he did the entire 2018 seasons where he only had one.
Brown is currently leading the Buffaloes in receptions (29) and receiving yards (442). He also leads the team in touchdowns with five, four receiving and one rushing. With junior Laviska Shenault Jr. out with an injury — he was hurt early in the ASU game — Brown has become a main target of Colorado quarterback Steven Montez.
Brown and the Buffaloes are hoping to get back to their winning ways Friday when they take on Oregon on the road in Eugene.
