Morley Records Runner-Up Finish at USATF 10 Mile Championship

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — University of Colorado runner Makena Morley earned a second-place finish on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the USATF 10 Mile Championships.
Morley, who has exhausted cross country eligibility but has an indoor and outdoor track season left, finished the race in 53 minutes, 17 seconds. The only racer to beat her was Sara Hall, who has now won the championship three straight years. Hall finished just six seconds before Morley (53:11).
Morley ran a very smart race, which included hanging tough in the final mile with Hall. Morley ended up finishing 27 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher Katy Jermann (53:47).
"We didn't want her to be bored to tears hanging around Boulder grinding out mileage with nothing to look forward to," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "So she and [associate head coach] Heather (Burroughs) dreamed up this idea of jumping into the championship and I went along with it. She outran my expectations for sure. I thought she would run in the middle to high 54's; she ran in the low 53's. She beat some pretty good professionals and probably put the word out for next July that another good national level Buff is coming out."
With this race complete, Morley will turn her attention back to the track for her final season where she is Colorado's 10,000-meter run record holder (32:28.58).
