Three Buffs Earn All-Conference

Kornieck, Tompkins and Te. Barton receive conference recognition
SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 Conference announced its postseason awards, honoring three from the Colorado soccer team on Wednesday. Senior Taylor Kornieck was the lone first-team honoree, while classmate Jalen Tompkins earned a second-team selection. Freshman Tessa Barton was selected to the All-Freshman Team.
Kornieck, a Henderson, Nev., native, leads the Buffaloes this season with 27 points. She has tied a career-high with 11 goals and added five assists this season. Kornieck ranks fourth in the conference in goals and sixth in points. She became Colorado's all-time points leader, surpassing Nikki Marshall, now with 99 career points. Kornieck has four game-winning goals this season and has totaled three multi-goal games.
The first-team selection is the second consecutive for the standout midfielder. She was also a second-team selection in 2017, adding to her All-Freshman selection in 2016.
"Taylor stepped onto campus in 2016 with high expectations and she met and surpassed them all," head coach Danny Sanchez said. "She has been a dominant midfielder and an All-Pac 12 player since day one. Taylor is one of the top players in the country and is still getting better."
Tompkins, a Phoenix, Ariz., native, has 11 wins this season. She became CU's all-time wins leader earlier this season, growing the number to 48. She has made 91 saves this season, helping her become the Buffs' all-time career saves leader, now with 359. For the first time in her career, Tompkins has played every minute this season. She has totaled seven shutouts on the year, giving her 24 in her career.
Tompkins was previously a two-time third-team selection. She was All-Freshman in 2016 as well.
"JJ has been one of the top goalkeepers in the Pac 12 since she started her first match in 2016," Sanchez noted. "Equally as important, is the fact that she has been a three-year captain for us and one of the best leaders we have ever produced here at Colorado."
Barton, a native of Littleton, Colo., was called into action early on in the season. She picked up her first point, an assist, in Colorado's third match of the season. Her first goal came the very next match, helping Colorado defeat No. 24 Texas. Barton started the final 13 matches of the season and 15 overall. She ranks second on the team in both goals (5) and points (12).
"We are pleased that Tessa was recognized by the coaches in our conference," Sanchez added. "She was very consistent throughout the year. Tessa has the determination and work ethic to continue to develop."
The Buffs season continues with the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. CU hosts Northern Colorado at Prentup Field. Kickoff is set for noon.
