Buffs Add Elite Talent In Tabron

November 13, 2019 | Volleyball

BOULDER – Colorado Buffaloes women's volleyball team announced Thursday morning the signing of Maya Tabron to a National Letter of Intent to kick off the 2020 recruiting class.

"We are thrilled to welcome Maya to Boulder," said head coach Jesse Mahoney. "Maya has all the tools to be an elite six-rotation outside hitter.  She's a fast-twitch, explosive athlete with a great arm and solid range offensively while also displaying great ball-handling and defensive ability.  With her high-level club as well as international playing experience, we are excited for her to transition into our program and compete early in her career."

Tabron is a 6-foot outside hitter from Christopher High School in Gilroy, Calif. She is ranked as the 82nd player on PrepVolleyball.com's 100 Senior Aces. Tabron led her team to a 23-3 record this season with an outstanding 230 kills and .477 hitting percentage. She also has 85 digs and 34 blocks this season in 18 recorded matches. She and her teammates continued action in the CIF State Division III Championships Tuesday with a 3-1 win in the first round where she put up a match-high 20 kills with a .395 hitting percentage.

"Finally being able to sign and officially be committed to playing for the Buffs the next years gives me so much joy and satisfaction," said Tabron. "It shows me that all my hard work has paid off and I am so excited to get the opportunity to continue my volleyball career at the highest level! Can't wait to officially be a part of the Buff family!"

PrepVolleyball.com described Tabron as a 'high-flying, dynamic athlete that exhibits a proficient, comprehensive skill set as an attacker and ball handler.' The senior has only been playing volleyball since she was 14 and has a powerful arm and all the skills to improve into an elite Pac-12 player.

The senior star also has overseas experience with dual-citizenship from Sweden. She lived in Sweden for six months during her junior year of high school and attended the National Volleyball High School where she helped her squad earn a gold medal in the Under-19 Northern European Championships. Having competed for the nation since she was 16, Tabron also was selected to the NEVZA Super 7 All-Tournament Team for the U17 and U19 teams in 2018 and 2019, respectfully.

Tabron comes from a long line of collegiate athletes as her parents both played basketball at University of Pacific. She has two older sisters, one that played basketball at Vanguard University and another that played volleyball at San Francisco State University. Outside of her immediate family, her cousin Brian Goodwin is a Major League Baseball player and plays outfield for the Los Angeles Angels.

Numerous schools were interested in Tabron including USC, Wisconsin, BYU and Pittsburg. She chose Colorado because she was impressed with the program and facilities and loved the welcoming feel of the coaches and players.

"We are still actively recruiting for our 2020 class and will be announcing more additions to our roster this spring," added Mahoney.

Tabron is the sixth top-100 PrepVolleyball.com player to join the Buffaloes in that past three years, joining Jenna Ewert, Meegan Hart, Jill Schneggenburger, Elissa Alcantara and Alexia Kuehl.
