Colorado takes care of Regis, 92-45

BOULDER – The Colorado women's basketball team was all business in Monday's 92-45 exhibition win over Regis at the CU Events Center.

The young Buffaloes got a chance to showcase their newest assets in their return to the court. Freshman Jaylyn Sherrod was perhaps the brightest of the new prospects for JR Payne's squad. She went 7-of-8 from the field for a team-high 18 points. She also added eight rebounds on the night.

Redshirt sophomore Aubrey Knight closed the night with a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Juniors Mya Hollingshed and Annika Jank each finished in double figures. Hollingshed closed the night with 11 points, while Jank went for 10.

As a team, the Buffs were an impressive 53.7 percent from the field. Defensively, Colorado outrebounded Regis, 54-30, and held the Rangers to 27.0 percent from the floor.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers recorded the game's first basket and kept pace with the Buffs in the first minutes of the night. The first media timeout saw the teams tied at six, but that would not last.

Sherrod hit a 3-pointer out of the timeout, giving Colorado a 9-6 lead. The basket kickstarted a 14-0 run to close the quarter for the Buffs. Sherrod recorded all eight of her first-quarter points in the run, helping CU to a 20-6 lead.

Colorado kept hitting on all cylinders, outscoring Regis 27-6 in the second quarter. Sherrod led the Buffs with 14 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the field in the half. The Buffs shot a game-best 73.3 percent from the floor in the second quarter, holding Regis to just two field goals in the period.

The Colorado lead grew to 35 at the half and hit as many as 52 points before the final horn.

KEY STATISTICS: All 12 available players for Colorado got in the score column. Colorado made 36 field goals on the night, a number that would have been a season-high for last year.

NOTEWORTHY:  Knight's 12 points would have been a career-high if not in an exhibition…CU's 54 rebounds would have been the third most last season…the team's 19 assists would have been tied for the second most last season.

QUOTES
Head Coach JR Payne

Overall Thoughts
"I'm just thrilled with our effort tonight. I thought we played extremely hard. We want to be the toughest, hardest-working, most disciplined team and I thought in a lot of ways we were that team tonight. Love our rebounding effort. To outrebound somebody by 25, especially Regis who is a very good rebounding team was great. We took care of the ball pretty well and just so many good things that we can take and then, of course, a lot of good things that we can continue to get better. Very happy with how we played tonight."

On Jaylyn Sherrod
"I mean I count that (as a debut). I even said in the locker room it's your first collegiate game. 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists, one turnover and a couple of blocks. It's a great stat line and Jaylyn's a great player. She's going to be a great Buff for years to come."

On being ready for the season
"I think we're definitely ready to play for real. As a coach, I see a lot of deficient areas. Maybe not deficient, but areas that we want to get better and improve. We're ready to compete. Our team is competitive. Our team is scrappy. Our team wants to play, and we're excited for the season to get going."

Freshman Jaylyn Sherrod
On playing her first game
"When I first started, I was kind of nervous, but it was just good to get out there and play. I haven't played in a minute, even going back to high school. It's just a good opportunity and a good chance to get back out there. I pride myself on what I do best and what I bring to the team. If I don't do my job, I let my team down. Bringing the energy is what I pride myself on."

Redshirt Sophomore Aubrey Knight
On her first game back
"It was amazing. I mean I was also nervous, considering I haven't played in basically a year. But I think that I have a fire set under me this year and I just can't take it for granted. I think that's the biggest thing when coming back from this injury, every game I have to give it my all. And that's why I love rebounding. I'm going to give that my all every time. If my shots are not falling, I'm going to rely on my rebounding or my energy and things like that. But I just think this season I'm going just try and play as hard as I can, every single game because you never know when it can be your last one. I kind of felt that last year and so just can't take it for granted anymore."

NEXT UP: Colorado opens the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 10 against New Jersey Institute of Technology.
