No. 9/11 Oregon State Tops Colorado

February 01, 2019 | Women's Basketball

Alexis Robinson scored a team-high 24 points

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The hot hand of No. 9/11 Oregon State proved too much to overcome for the Colorado women's basketball team on Friday. CU's opponent shot better than 50 percent for the second consecutive game, as the Beavers picked up the 89-65 win at Gill Coliseum.

Oregon State (18-3, 8-1 Pac-12), the nation's most efficient 3-point shooting team (42.1 percent), stayed true to form on Friday. The Buffaloes limited the Beavers opportunities early, but OSU made the most of their looks from behind the perimeter.

Aleah Goodman was perfect from behind the arc for the Beavers. She hit OSU's only two 3's in the first quarter on her way to a 6-for-6 night. Goodman was one of four Beavers to finish in double-figures, totaling 25 points. Destiny Slocum led all players with 26 points, shooting 10-of-16 from the field. Mikayla Pivec and Joanna Grymek closed with 12 points apiece.

Senior Alexis Robinson continued her strong play. She led the Buffs with 24 points. Sophomore Mya Hollingshed added 16, while junior Quinessa Caylao-Do rounded out the Buffs' offense with 14 points.

"Lex has just been phenomenal," head coach JR Payne stated after the game. "Offensively, she has been aggressive in pretty much every facet of the word. And we need her to be. In order for us to be successful, we need her to have that mindset."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Colorado matched OSU's 3-point ability early on. The Buffs hit 50 percent (4-8) in the opening quarter. It was Goodman that got the home team in rhythm, hitting OSU's only two attempts in the first quarter. She closed half a perfect 4-for-4 from deep, hitting all but one of Oregon State's 3's in half.

The Beavers scored an opponent-high 51 points in the opening half, shooting 67.7 percent (21-31). Oregon State led by six after the first quarter and increased its lead to 18 points by the end of the second quarter.

The Beavers hit over 60 percent from the field in three of the four quarters. They opened 11-for-16 (68.8 percent) and followed it up with a 10-for-15 (66.7 percent) second quarter.

Colorado (10-10, 0-9 Pac-12) was able to slow the Beaver's production in the second half. CU began the half with a 9-0 run, cutting the OSU lead down to 51-42 in the first 90 seconds of the third quarter. CU started 4-for-4 from the field but finished just 6-of-16. Defensively, the Buffs held Oregon State to 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) in the period.

"I was proud of our second-half effort," Payne added. "Third quarters have been a little bit of a bugaboo for us. To play this team on their home-court to five points in the second half I think is a tremendous effort."

TURNING POINT: Oregon State's efficiency was on display the entire night. The Beavers really took control with a 6-for-6 stretch in the second quarter. OSU went from leading 29-25 to a 44-27 advantage in a span of 2:28.

WHAT IT MEANS: CU's rough patch continues, falling to 0-9 in conference play. It is the first time CU has been winless in its first nine conference games since the 2015-16 season.

KEY STATISTICS: While much of the focus was on Oregon State's ability to shoot from 3, the Beavers did just as much damage in the paint. OSU outscored CU 40-18 down low. The Beavers also had a plus-11 rebounding advantage (39-28)…

NOTEWORTHY: Colorado was without senior Kennedy Leonard for the sixth consecutive game…she continues to be day-to-day…Oregon State's 89 were the most scored by an opponent this season…CU's 32-point deficit in the fourth quarter was its largest of the season… CU had season lows in free throw makes (2) and attempts (4)…Robinson totaled her third 20-point game of the season.

QUOTEWORTHY: "I knew they would shoot the ball well because that is what they do" - CU's JR Payne
