14th-Ranked Buffs Fall To No. 6 Stony Brook

February 22, 2019 | Lacrosse

BOULDER – The 14th-ranked University of Colorado Lacrosse team was never able to find their footing on Friday afternoon, as they fell 15-5 to No. 6 Stony Brook, moving to 1-2 on the season.

WHAT HAPPENED:  The two teams battled through nearly five scoreless before Stony Brook opened the scoring at the 25:14 mark of the first half and proceeded to score seven straight goals.

With three yellow cards in the first 20 minutes of action, any momentum the Buffs seemed to grab was quickly stifled. Freshman attacker Charlie Rudy picked up the game's first two yellows and was disqualified just 11 minutes into the game. The next yellow card was issued against sophomore Sadie Grozier at the 11:41 mark of the first half, bringing the foul disparity to 12-3 in favor of Stony Brook.

Miranda Stinson put the Buffs on the board at the 1:52 mark. Stony Brook answered back to bring the halftime score to 8-1.
Stony Brook opened the scoring in the second half, but Samantha Nemirov answered back to bring CU within 9-2. That would be the closest the Buffs would ever come, however, as the Seawolves responded by scoring a pair of goals 12 seconds apart from one another.

Stinson found Grozier for the Buffs' third goal of the game, bringing the score to 11-3. The teams went back and forth for most of the final 15 minutes of action, with Stinson and Sophie Castillo both finding the back of the net for goals.

Stony Brook scored the game's final two goals to win by a final of 15-5.

KEY STATISTICS: Colorado was outshot by Stony Brook by a final margin of 36-26.

QUOTABLE:
Head Coach Ann Whidden
On Stony Brook defense
"Stony Brook is a great defensive team. For the many years that Joe [Spallina] has been there, they are aggressive, strong, physical, they play well one-on-one and they take up a lot of space in there. We just weren't doing a great job of seeing the openings and being aggressive ourselves and really moving at pace."

On comparing last weekend's success to tonight's game
"Well we played a different team, so there's that. Stony Brook is a good team and I think they put a lot of pressure on us, they executed offensively, they played a tough defense and they were tough all over the field. For us, when you shoot 5-for-26, that's not going to help you win games and at the end of the day. We didn't do a good enough job executing defensively and offensively, with what we knew was coming at us."

On looking ahead to #25 Michigan
"We have to look at the film and get better from this game, and we have to look at Michigan and get our players prepared for that. We are going to play another physical and strong team. A team with a lot of confidence and a lot of athleticism so it's not going to be any easier for us on Sunday.  Our players have to be accountable and own this 15-5 at the end of the day. We have got to comeback Sunday with a little bit more chip on our shoulder and prove something."

On Julia Lisella playing well in net despite Stony Brooks goal count
"You know what you're going to get with Julia and that's great. At the end of the day, defensively as a whole we didn't do a good enough job and she's part of that. Everybody's part of that in terms of our communication and execution. So, it really doesn't matter the stats."

QUOTABLE:
Attacker Sophie Castillo
On the game
"Obviously, not the outcome we wanted. They came out strong. We didn't. Second half I think we kind of picked it up, but we just need to learn how to play a full 60 minutes. I think that's something that when we get back to practice, we will hopefully get better at."

On the pace of the second half and keeping intensity throughout
"That's one of our coaches' things, is just playing a full 60 and we just didn't have it here today. Even the past two games we haven't quite been there yet, and we are just going to have to keep working and get better at that."

On looking ahead to the Wolverines
"We definitely just have to get past this game. We can't go into it with our heads down after this loss. Big game against Michigan, it's just as tough as this one. We have to get over this game and start preparing for them starting now."
