Colorado Jumps to 14th in USTFCCCA Rankings
February 04, 2019 | Track and Field
NEW ORLEANS – The University of Colorado men's track and field program had the largest jump in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings, vaulting nine spots to the No. 14-ranked team in the nation the USTFCCCA announced Monday.
Â
The enormous leap in the standings is all thanks to Joe Klecker's performance Saturday evening in the men's 3,000. The senior opened the 2019 season by breaking the facility record at 8:01.68, a mark that converts down to the best time in the nation.
Â
Klecker's 7:48.32 is the second-best mark on CU's all-time bests list behind Adam Goucher's school record. It also is the fastest time in the 3,000 ever ran indoors in the state of Colorado, breaking Frank Shorter's 8:04.2 mark ran in the Balch Fieldhouse in 1977.
Â
The mark jumped the Buffaloes from 23rd to 14th and moves them to the fourth-ranked MPSF team in the top-15. Colorado now trails No. 10 Stanford, No. 11 USC and No. 13 BYU in the rankings for the MPSF.
Â
On the women's side, the team dropped three spots to No. 25 in the nation despite Tabor Scholl and Makena Morley both running the 15th-best times in the nation in the mile and 3,000, respectfully.
Â
Colorado will travel to three different locations this weekend; Seattle, Wash., for the annual Husky Classic, Fayetteville, Ark., for the Tyson Invitational and to Colorado Springs to run for the first time at the new indoor track at UC-Colorado Springs.
