PALOS VERDES, Calif. — The University of Colorado women's golf team had another tough day at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, shooting a 25-over 309 on Monday.
Â
Currently the Buffs are 16th with a 48-over 616 (307-309). CU is one-stroke back from Pac-12 foe Arizona State (315-299—615).
Â
Stanford and UCLA swapped positions on the second day of the tournament at the par 71, 6,017-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club. The Cardinal moved up to first after recording a 5-under 279 to put it at 574 (295-279) through the first two rounds. The Bruins dropped to second while shooting a 5-over 289, which put them six strokes behind the Cardinal (291-289—580).
Â
"It was a tough day," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Our team just needs some time and practice to get going. This is a very early season event for us and the reality is we are not quite ready. But on the positive side, the team is getting good experience against a great field and on the course that will host the Pac-12 in April."
Â
Junior Kirsty Hodgkins continued to lead the Buffs through the raining and tough course conditions, shooting a 5-over 76 on the second day. Her 9-over 151 (75-76) has her tied for 33rd with one round left. She got out to a good start, making par on the first and third holes, as well as a birdie on the second. She bogeyed on the next hole, which put her even. She made par on the next two holes to stay even, but hit a tough patch with four consecutive bogeys to put her at 4-over through 10 holes. She finished her round with additional pars, two bogeys and one birdie.
Â
Freshman Malak Boureada is now second for the Buffs after shooting her second 6-over 77 round of the tournament. She is currently tied for 56th with a 12-over 154. She did quite well through her first seven holes, going 1-under with five pars, one birdie and one bogey. Hole No. 1 gave her a little trouble as she recorded her only double on the round, putting her 2-over. She was able to collect herself on the following hole, recording another par, but finished the remaining nine holes with four bogeys and five pars.
Â
Senior Haley Nist is just one stroke from teammate Boureada, shooting a 5-over 76 in the second round. Through two rounds, she has recorded a 13-over 155 and is tied for 61st. She had a solid start to her day on the 12th hole, making par on four straight holes. She tallied a bogey and a double on the following two holes, which put her at 3-over. As she started the front nine, she recorded four bogeys and a par (6-over). On No. 6, she recorded her first birdie of the round, bringing her back to 6-over. She made par on the final three holes on the front and finished her round with one more birdie and two pars.
Â
CU's other senior, Gillian Vance, also had a nice start to her round. Through the first eight holes, she made four pars, three bogeys and one birdie to sit at 2-over. She went up to 3-over after recording a bogey on No. 1, but made par on the subsequent hole to hole at 3-over. Unfortunately, she had a bit of trouble over the next three holes with a pair of double and one bogey. Sitting at 8-over through 13 holes, she was able to regain her composure and finish well, making four pars and a bogey. She is tied for 64th with a 14-over 156.
Â
Sophomore Elle Otten shot a 10-over 81 and is tied for 81st with a 19-over 161. In her second round, she recorded eight bogeys, six pars, two doubles and a pair of birdies.
Â
Andrea Lee (Stanford) moved up from second to first in the second round, shooting another 1-under 70 to match her round from the first day. She has a three-stroke lead over the rest of the field with her 140 scorecard. Four others are currently tied for second with 1-over 143s.
Â
The Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge will conclude on Tuesday, Feb. 5.
