Late Rally For A Second Straight Salvages The Round
WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i — The University of Colorado men's golf team, after a spring opener record on the day before, struggled for two-thirds of the second round before recovering late in ended the day in 12th place in the 28th Annual Amer Ari Invitational on Hawai'i's Big Island.
No. 1 Oklahoma State remained in the lead through 36 holes, with the Cowboys in with a team score of 540, or 36-under par in extending their lead to five shots. No. 8 Southern California moved up a couple of spots into second after a 20-under 268 Friday total (545 overall), but the day belonged to No. 14 Texas. The Longhorns jumped from ninth into third after scoring a 23-under 265 score for a 546 total as UT's scores all shot 68 or better with 28 birdies and only five bogeys.
No. 29 Texas Tech and No. 45 Oregon are tied for fourth with 552 totals.
CU dropped four spots from eighth into 12th place after posted a 3-over par 291 score, giving the Buffaloes a 5-under par total of 576. Colorado opened here with an 8-under 280, which was the school's best score in relation to par for the first round of the spring season.
But things could have been worse; CU dipped as low as into 17th place with a third of the holes remaining, with the four players contributing to the team total playing the last six holes collectively at 9-under par.
"We had just a really poor start and middle part of the round across the board," said CU head coach Roy Edwards. "Sloppy and out position way too many times … we had difficulty recovering from those positions. The guys did a really nice job of continuing to compete and brought the round back to respectability the last five, six holes, which is a positive from the day.
"Our competitiveness is a big strength of ours," he added. "We absolutely have learn to mitigate and not exacerbate our mistakes as the season goes on. If we can do that then we can be pretty good."
Freshman Kristoffer Max is pacing the Buffaloes here through two rounds, as he recorded a second straight subpar round on the 7,074-yard, par-72 Waikoloa King' Course layout to stand tied for 31st. He turned in a 1-under 71 for a 3-under total of 141, as he had five birdies and nine pars against four bogeys on Friday. It's the first time in his young collegiate career that he has scored back-to-back rounds under par after opening with a 70 here.
Sophomore Trevor Olkowski is tied for 44th, as he turned in a 2-over 74 in round two for a 2-under 142 overall score. 77th, posting a 2-over 74 score Thursday. After starting his day with a birdie, he had bad six-hole stretch in the middle of his round where he was five-over par (three bogeys and a double). But he gathered himself to close strong, with two birdies and four pars much like he did on Thursday. He's played the tough par-3's here at 1-under, tied for 10th best in the 109-player field.
Junior Daniel O'Loughlin carded a 3-over 75, his second-highest score of the year in closing the day tied for 51st with a 1-under 143. He was 5-over with six holes to play and just as Olkowski did, he finished up with two birdies and four pars.
Junior Ross Macdonald is tied for 64 after he fashioned a 1-under 71 Friday for a 1-over 145 total. He had an eagle on the par-5 No. 4 hole and two birdies, all in his last six holes to get under par on the day and aid CU's late comeback in the standings.
Junior Andre Leveque struggled for a second straight day, as he turned in a 5-over 77 for an 8-over 152 that has him tied for 96th. The bulk of those strokes came on a triple bogey on the par-3 15th, as he also tied for the team-high on the day with five birdies.
Freshman John Paterson, competing here individually, shot a 3-over 75 for a 147 score (also 3-over), that has him tied for 75th. He had some disaster early when he also triple-bogeyed the par-3 No. 15 hole, his second of the day, but to his credit he played the rest of his round even (four birdies, four bogeys, nine pars).
Texas' Cole Hammer assumed the individual lead after firing an 8-under 64; he's in at 13-under 131. Hammer birdies six straight holes on the back nine at one point and had nine on the day.
The third and final round is set for Wednesday with another 10:30 a.m. (MST) shotgun. Colorado will be paired with Oregon State, Pacific and San Jose State and will tee off on holes 8 through 10.

NOTES: The average score Friday – 72.33 – was a big higher than in the first round (72.07) … Three of the par-3 holes remain among the six hardest through two rounds (Nos. 3, 7 and 15); the six Buffs here played those at 14-over Friday, otherwise were a collective 3-under on the other 15 holes … The Buffaloes five designated scorers had an eagle and 18 birdies for the second straight round, but had 10 fewer pars (47) than Thursday … The four times O'Loughlin has shot 74 or higher this season, his average over his next four rounds is 69.5.
