Sophomore Olkowski Paces Buffaloes
WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i — The University of Colorado men's golf team couldn't sustain its fine play in the first round for the final 36 holes here and slipped into a 15th place finish in the 28th Annual Amer Ari Invitational on Hawai'i's Big Island.
No. 1 Oklahoma State led from start to finish in winning with a 47-under par team score of 817, which defeated No. 16 Auburn by 10 shots; the Tigers had the best final round score of 14-under to close with an 827 total. No. 14 Texas claimed the bronze spot with an 829 score, with No. 8 Southern California and No. 45 Oregon tying for fourth with 834 totals.
CU opened here with an 8-under 280, the school's best score in relation to par for the first round of the spring season in its history, but just couldn't sustain that level of play. The Buffs dropped to 12th after two round and eventually finished 15th after posting a 13-over 301 in the final round for an 872 overall score, or 8-over par in the end.
Sophomore Trevor Olkowski led the Buffaloes here, finishing up with a 3-under 213 overall total that tied him for 30th. He scored a double bogey on No. 17 to go 2-over on his round, but came back to score three of his five birdies over the last nine holes to shoot a 1-under 71 Saturday on the 7,074-yard, par-72 Waikoloa King' Course. He had a team-best 13 birdies this week and played the tough par-3s here at 1-under, ninth-best in the meet overall.
Junior Daniel O'Loughlin finished up with a 1-over 73 to close at even-par 216, which tied him 48th. He had two birdies, 13 pars and three bogeys, the last of which came on his final hole of the day (No. 8), the only time Saturday he wasn't even or under par. He had nine birdies and 37 pars over the three days here, the latter a team-high which also were the 11th-most in the 109-man field.
Freshman Kristoffer Max carded a final round 77 (5-over) that put him in black numbers for his finish, a 2-over 218 that tied him for 58th. He had just birdied the par-4 No. 17 hole to get his day down to 1-over through 10 holes (he started on No. 8), but would score a triple bogey 8 on the par-5 18th that sent him off track. He finished the day with two birdies and 12 pars, with two bogeys, a double and that triple.
Junior Ross Macdonald tied for 86th after he had his struggles in the final round, finishing with an 8-over 80 that pushed him to 1-over for the event (225). One of three Buffs who had one birdie and nine pars on his scorecard Saturday, had had seven bogeys and a double against those on the positive side of the ledger.
Junior Andre Leveque couldn't get on track and really had his troubles in the final round, carding a 12-over 84 to finish up with a 236 total, or 20-over par. Half of those strokes Saturday came on two triple bogeys, but he managed just a single bogey and nine pars with five other bogeys and a double as he finished 102nd.
Freshman John Paterson, competing here individually, tied for 94th after he closed with an 8-over par 80 for an 11-over 227. He had an identical card compared to Macdonald, a birdie and nine pars with seven bogeys and a double, the latter of which he opened his day with. He had settled down after that but would bogey six of his final eight holes.
"Trevor had a nice day today, but other than him, it was a rough day and overall a rough tournament for the Buffs," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "We just weren't very good. We have a lot of talented guys, and what happened here is that five of the six just happened to play poorly at the same time.
"Obviously everyone here is frustrated but it is important to learn from the mistakes we made here and then move on," he added. "We have to work hard to get ready for the Classic Club (Wyoming's Desert Invitational) in two weeks. We do feel confident we have some great golf right around the corner."
Oklahoma State's Matthew Wolff recorded the best score Saturday – a 7-under 65 – and used it to move up from fourth place into medalist honors with an 18-under 198 total. That was good for a three-shot win over two others.
The Buffaloes will return to action in Palm Desert, Calif., in two weeks in Wyoming's Desert Intercollegiate.
