MacDonald In The Hunt For Medalist Honors
CHULA VISTA, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team continued to have its struggles this spring, as the Buffaloes are in 11th place after two rounds were completed here Monday in the 12th annual Lamkin San Diego Classic.
No. 4 Arizona State holds a comfortable lead over No. 7 Texas, as the Sun Devils had four of the nine players under par Monday in posting a 15-under 561 team score. The Longhorns are in at 5-under 571, with No. 31 North Carolina (575), No. 49 St. Mary's (582) and co-host San Diego State (595) rounding out the top five.
The Buffaloes, ranked No. 77 nationally, were in the middle of the pack after the first round, turning in a 5-over 293 that had them in seventh, trailing ASU by 13 shots. But CU was unable to post many holes in red numbers, the scorers with just 18 birdies on the day, just eight in the second round when it posted a 303 team score for an overall total of 596 (20-over).
CU was paired with the Sun Devils, Mississippi and North Carolina in both rounds.
Junior Ross Macdonald is leading the CU charge, as he is tied for fifth after fashioning a 69-73—142 scorecard on the 7,033-yard, par-72 San Diego Country Club course layout. He arrived at his 2-under performance with a consistent day of an eagle, seven birdies, 21 pars against seven bogeys. The seven birdies are tied for 15th in the field, and he was consistent across the board, playing the par-3s at 1-over (tied for 10th-best), the par-4s even (tied for 12th) and the par-5s at 3-under (tied for 14th).
Junior Daniel O'Loughlin is tied for 39th, posting a 73-76—149 total (5-over) on a day he basically hung around par; in fact, his 28 pars are the tournament-high through 36 holes. But CU's birdie leader on the season with 75 coming in managed just a pair, one in each round. He opened his second round with a double bogey and closed it with two bogeys on his last three holes, also uncharacteristic for CU's stroke average leader.
Sophomore Trevor Olkowski couldn't get untracked either, recording back-to-back 76s for an 8-over 152 total, which has him tied for 58th. He did have an eagle in the first round on No. 2, a 513-yard par-5, to go with three birdies and 20 pars opposite 11 bogeys and a double.
Sophomore Cole Krantz is tied for 63rd, as he turned in a 75-78—153 effort Monday, or 9-over par in the third tournament this season he is a designated scorer. He had six birdies and 17 pars to oppose 11 bogeys and two doubles, the latter he scored on the back nine in his second time around the SDCC track. The six birdies are tied for the 24th most in the field.
Freshman Kristoffer Max had his struggles Monday, ending the day in 88th place with a 77-84—161 score, or 17-over par. A few big numbers did him in, as he did record five birdies with 16 pars, but those were against 10 bogeysm three doubles and two triples.
"Ross really had a nice day," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "It looked like he putted pretty well and was in some good spots most of the time. Being well-positioned is very important here. For the rest of the guys it was a struggle, but for the most part, we had some good fight. A good round tomorrow can move us up."
Texas' Pierceson Coody owns the individual lead through 36 holes, carding a 71-65—136, or 8-under par, for a two-stroke lead over Arizona State's Mason Anderson, who shot a pair of 69s for a 6-under 138 total.
The third and final round is slated for Tuesday morning, with the Buffaloes paired with longtime rivals Colorado State and Nebraska along with Louisiana.
NOTES: The average score for the 92-man field was 75.07 for both rounds Monday, the second round (75.60) playing over a stroke higher than the opening 18 (74.54) … Fifteen of the 18 holes are playing over par … Colorado is playing the par-3 holes at 15-over, tied for fifth-best in the field; while under par on the par-5s (4-under), that's 10th-best, a category the Buffaloes are usually within the top of the pack. CU was plus-27 on the par-4s (12th) … There were just 10 rounds shot in the 60s, and only three in the afternoon, which made Pierceson Coody's 65 for Texas the most outstanding round of the tournament (he had seven birdies and 11 pars), the only bogey free round out of 183 Monday.
