Buffs Finish 12th at Tar Heel Classic

LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic — The University of Colorado women's golf team moved up one position to finish 12th at the Tar Heel Classic Hosted by Suzy Whaley on Saturday. Â

The Buffs posted their best round of the tournament as they shot a 10-over 298 at the 6,140-yard, par 72 Casa de Campo Teeth of the Dog Course. Overall they finished with a 43-over 907 (300-309-298).

"We saw a little improvement today, especially by Malak (Bouraeda) and Haley (Nist)," head coach Anne Kelly said. "But still a disappointing tournament. We have had a tough spring so far and just can't seem to get more than two competitive scores per round. Hopefully we make can make a few adjustments, get some good weather for practice, have everyone healthy and start to play the kind of golf this team is capable of."

With a strong lead after the first day, Wake Forest, hung on for the win with a 14-under 274 to finish the tournament. WFU posted rounds of 282-285 and 274. The 274 was the lowest round by a team during the two-day event. Virginia finished second at 4-under (284-287-289—860).

Junior Kirsty Hodgkins had the best finish for the Buffs as she tied for 26th with a 6-over 222. After shooting rounds of 71 and 74 on Friday, she recorded a 5-over 77 in the final round with 11 pars and 1 birdie. Â

Senior Haley Nist moved up six spots in the standings with her 1-over 73 round. She finished the tournament with a 13-over 229 scorecard of 78-78-73. In her last 18, she made 15 pars and added one birdie and two bogeys.

Freshman Malak Bouraeda had the best round for the Buffs, shooting a 2-under 70. She shot four birdies in the first five holes, which put her at 4-under. She finished the round with two more birdies, eight pars, two bogeys and one double. Overall she tied for 57th with a 14-over 230 (79-80-70).

Sophomore Elle Otten finished up tied with Bouraeda for 57th (14-over 230). She recorded a final round of 6-over (78), which included three birdies and eight pars.

Senior Gillian Vance ended up tied for 67th, recording a 20-over 236. She shot a pair of 78s in the first two rounds and on Saturday, tallied an 8-over 80.

Jennifer Kupcho (Wake Forest) hung on for the win, recording a 14-under 202 (66-69-67). She won by nine strokes as the runner-up, Ohio State's Aneka Seumanutafa finished with a 5-under 211 (71-67-73).

The next tournament for the Buffs is the PING/ASU Invitational, March 29-31, in Tempe, Ariz.
