Buffs 14th After First Round of PING/ASU Invitational
March 29, 2019 | Women's Golf
PHOENIX, Ariz. — With one round finished and two to go, the University of Colorado women's golf team is 14th overall at the PING/ASU Invitational. The Buffaloes collectively shot a 21-over 309 and are eight strokes back from Georgia, which scored a 301, on Friday.
Â
Pac-12 Conference foe Stanford is the team leader at the event with a 1-under 287. Just one stroke back is the host, Arizona State, which recorded an even 288 at its 6,430-yard, par 72, Papago Golf Course. Â The team race is very close as the top four are separated by a few strokes. Oklahoma is third (289) and Oregon is fourth (290).
Â
"The bright spot today was Kelsey with a 74 in her first collegiate round as a team member," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Other than that it was a struggle for the team. Kirsty was going well with the exception of two holes. Hopefully we pull together tomorrow and get things going in the right direction. We struggled with putting; it was not a good day on the greens for our team."
Â
Freshman Kelsey Webster leads the Buffs after shooting a 2-over 74, which is the first round in her collegiate career that counts for the team score. She has played in two other tournaments for CU, but in both, she played as an individual, meaning her score did not count towards the team score. Overall, she is tied for 30th at the tournament.
Â
Webster's round got out to a great start as she sank a birdie on the first round (No. 10). She followed that up with a bogey and two pars, putting her even through four holes played. In the following five holes, she had two more bogeys and made three more pars, which put her at 2-over in the first nine. As she started the front nine, she made par before recording her second birdie of the day. She scored three more bogeys and three pars on the next six holes, before she finished her round with an eagle on the final hole, her first of the season.
Â
Junior Kirsty Hodgkins and senior Haley Nist are currently tied for 51st as each totaled a 4-over 76 on the day. Hodgkins totaled eight pars, four birdies, four bogeys and a pair of doubles, while Nist collected 12 pars, one birdie and five bogeys.
Â
Sitting fourth for the Buffs after day one is sophomore Elle Otten. She is 81st after shooting an 11-over 83. Freshman Malak Bouraeda is fifth on the team after recording a 14-over 86.
Â
Senior Gillian Vance is playing as an individual and is tied for 72nd with a 7-over 79 after the first round. She started her day with a birdie and went on to record nine pars and eight bogeys. Â
Â
Through the first 18 holes, Stanford's Andrea Lee lead has a one-stroke lead over Oklahoma's Kaitlin Milligan (67-68) as Lee shot a 5-under in the first round and Milligan recorded a 4-under.
Â
The second round starts at 8 a.m. PT on Saturday, March 30.
