Edwards Cites Short Game Struggles

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Colorado men's golf team is still looking for that signature tournament this spring, but got off to a poor start here Monday, landing in 15th place after the first two rounds of the University of Arizona's National Invitational Tournament.

No. 4 Arizona State saw its five players scored a combined seven rounds in the 60s, including all five doing so in the second round en route to a 33-under par team score of 543.  The Sun Devils had a 25-under par 263 in round two, believed to be the best individual single round in college golf this season, as they had to "throw out" a 69, their fifth score in the afternoon.  No. 5 Southern California is in hot pursuit, owning a 549 score, with No. 3 Oklahoma a distant third at this point at 556.  No. 32 UNLV (557) and No. 65 New Mexico (558) round out the top five.

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 75 nationally, have a 586 score, or 10-over par, through 36 holes, which has them down the line in 15th in the 16-team event.  After opening the spring season with an 8-under par 280 score in the first round in Hawai'i-Hilo's Amer Ari Invitational, the Buffaloes have nine straight team rounds over par.

CU was in 13th after the morning round, recording a 3-over 291 score.

Junior Ross Macdonald and sophomore Trevor Olkowski are pacing the Buffaloes, as each are tied for 37th with under par 143 scores on the 7,200-yard, par-72 Omni Tucson National's Catalina Course.

Macdonald opened with a 70 in the morning and came back with an afternoon 73; he had five birdies and 27 pars with four bogeys as he hung around par for most of each round, especially in the second round, when he parred 14 of his first 15 holes before finishing birdie-bogey-par.

Olkowski recorded rounds of 71 and 72; he was headed for two subpar rounds before he scored a double bogey in his last hole of the day (the par-5 10th).  He had a team-high seven birdies and 24 pars on the day, against four bogeys and that one double.  He played the par-3s even, 11th-best in the 84-man field.

Junior Daniel O'Loughlin is tied for 67th, as he opened with a 74-75—149 effort, which is 5-over par.  CU's stroke average leader, he's been a tad off his game his last six rounds (all over par); also the team leader in birdies with 82, or one for every five holes this season, he had just four Monday, with 23 pars and nine bogeys.

Sophomore Cole Krantz is tied for 75th, shooting a 76 in round one and then a 75 for a 7-over 151.  He had four birdies and 22 pars against nine bogeys and a double here Monday; two of those birdies came late in the first round to inch back closer to par.

Freshman Kristoffer Max is in 77th with a 9-over 153, as he fashioned rounds of 78 and 75.  He had six birdies and 17 pars, but those were countered by 11 bogeys and two doubles.  He did finish his day with back-to-back birdies on his last two holes (Nos. 10 and 11).

"It was just a very poor day, pretty much all around," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "Generally, our short game was way off, in particular our speed on the greens."

Southern California's Justin Suh is the individual leader after 36 holes, as he carded a 66-64—130 scorecard, standing some 14-under par.  That's only good for a two-shot lead over Arizona's Trevor Werbylo, who shot a 70-62—132 score, as he had eight birdies and an eagle his second time around the Tucson National track Monday.

SONORAN SHOWDOWN: In conjunction with the N.I.T., Arizona is also hosting the Sonoran Showdown for 21 individuals from the schools competing in the main event.  CU freshman John Paterson is representing the Buffaloes, and through two rounds he is tied for 13th with a 3-over par, 71-72—143 scorecard.   He had seven birdies and 17 pars opposite eight bogeys and two doubles on the Tucson National's 6,552-yard, par-70 Sonoran Course and played the par-3s Monday at a combined 1-under, third-best in the field.  Arizona State's Cameron Sisk leads this event with a 66-65—131 score (9-under par), which is good for a one-shot lead over two others.

The third and final round is set for a shotgun start at 9 a.m. MDT Tuesday morning; Colorado will be paired with San Diego.  The last 18 holes of the Sonoran Showdown will commence at 7:30 a.m., also in a shotgun format.

NOTES: The average score for the first 36 holes (168 rounds) was 72.08; it was almost a stroke lower in the afternoon (71.63) than the morning (72.54) … The Buffaloes didn't have a lot of big numbers – just four double bogeys – but didn't score well compared to the field, with only 26 birdies while recording 37 bogeys … The Buffs were fifth in pars (113), but the birdie count mirrored their place in the standings (15th) … Usually a team that feasts on par-5s, CU was a combined 6-under (14th in the field), while the leaders were all 20 or more strokes in the red on the long ones … There were 44 rounds in the 60s Monday, including the low round of 62 by Arizona's Werbylo, but unfortunately the Buffs didn't crack the 70 barrier … The average score in the Sonoran was 70.93 for 42 rounds, practically the same for each round (71.0 in the morning, 70.86 in the afternoon) … Colorado is 71-43-1 this year against Division competition, so any upward movement Tuesday will help keep the Buffs well above .500, the first criteria needed to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
