Macdonald leads Buffs for second straight tournament
TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Colorado men's golf team inched up one spot into a 14th place finish here Tuesday as the University of Arizona's National Invitational Tournament came to a close.
No. 4 Arizona State cruised to the team win, as the Sun Devils posted a 50-under par team score of 814; of the 12 scores that made up ASU's total, 11 of those were in the 60s. No. 5 Southern California was a distant second, despite posting a 29-under par 835 score, which edged No. 3 Oklahoma (836) by a single shot. No. 52 Colorado State rose into a fourth-place finish (839) while No. 42 Iowa State rounded out the top five (840).
The Buffaloes, ranked No. 75 nationally, finished with a 16-over par 880 score after wrapping things up here with a 6-over 294 on Tuesday. While that did enable CU to pass Wyoming in moving from 15th into 14th place, it was the 10th straight team round over par. Seven of the first 16 rounds of the year were subpar, with two others coming in at even-par, so this group of Buffaloes obviously has been capable of better play.
"It was more of the same today, we just struggled all week," head coach Roy Edwards said. "It's very frustrating. There were some good moments, but we just made too many mistakes and almost all of them came in the short game and with our wedges.
"However, this can be a positive if we use our results to learn from and improve," he added. "We obviously have to make some changes to play to our capabilities and I expect us to work hard to get there."
Junior Ross Macdonald turned in an even-par 72 Tuesday to close with a 1-under 215 score, which tied him for 37th individually on the 7,200-yard, par-72 Omni Tucson National's Catalina Course. He had four birdies and 10 pars against four bogeys to wrap up the event, and was one of three Buffs with a team-best nine birdies for the tourney and was the only one without a hole worse than bogey. He was 5-under on the dozen par-5s, the best by a Buff as well in leading the team for the second tournament in a row.
Sophomore Trevor Olkowski tied for 46th after closing with a 2-over 74, which gave him a 1-over 217. He opened with a birdie on his first hole (No. 15), but he got into trouble on the par-4 18th, scoring a triple that put him in black numbers for the rest of the round. He did manage one more birdie, which allowed him to tie for the team-high nine here. He played the par-3 holes even, tied for 14th-best in the 84-man field.
Junior Daniel O'Loughlin tied for 66th, closing with a second straight 75 which gave him an 8-over total of 224. The team stroke average leader, he's had an uncharacteristic two tournaments in a row, averaging over 74 strokes per round with no subpar scores after recording at least one in each of CU's first seven meets of the year. He had two birdies Tuesday to give him six total for the tourney, along with 12 pars, three bogeys and a double; he also had 35 pars for the event.
Sophomore Cole Krantz and freshman Kristoffer Max both tied for 72nd with 10-over par 226 totals. Max shot a 1-over 73 Tuesday, scoring three birdies and 12 pars against two bogeys and a double; he also had a team-high nine birdies for the two days. Krantz finished up with a 3-over 75, with a team-best four birdies in the final round, along with eight pars opposite five bogeys and a double.
Arizona State's Alex del Rey carded a final round 66 to earn medalist honors with a 17-under par 199 total. He topped second round leader Justin Suh of Southern California by a single shot, along with defeating two other teammates in the top five.
The Buffaloes return to action next week during CU's spring break, as they will travel to Palo Alto, Calif., to participate in Stanford's "The Goodwin." It's the 50th annual edition of the event which will feature 26 competing schools with 18 holes of play each day, next Thursday through Saturday (March 28-30).
SONORAN SHOWDOWN: In conjunction with the N.I.T., Arizona also hosted the Sonoran Showdown for 21 individuals from the schools competing in the main event. CU freshman John Paterson represented the Buffaloes; he tied for 12th with a 6-over par, 71-74-71—216 scorecard. He opened strong Tuesday with three birdies on his first four holes, but ran into trouble with back-to-back double bogey 6s on Nos. 4 and 5. He played the rest of the way even in scoring five birdies on the day, with 12 birdies and 26 pars overall on Tucson National's 6,552-yard, par-70 Sonoran Course. The dozen birdies tied for the fifth-most in the field, and he played the 12 par-3s combined at even par, tied for third-best. Arizona State's Cameron Sisk won the meet with a 66-65-66—197 score (13-under par), which was good for a one-shot win over teammate James Leow.
NOTES: The average score for the tournament (252 rounds) was 72.29; it was the highest for the final round at 72.71 … Once again, CU didn't have a lot of big numbers – just four on the day (three double bogeys and a triple) and just had eight holes worse than bogey all tournament, but had a poor birdie (41) to bogey (52) ratio … The Buffs were fourth in pars (169), but the team's 41 birdies were next-to-last … The Buffs did better on the par-5s Tuesday, playing them 9-under; for the event, CU was 13th (15-under); the Buffaloes were 13th in par-3 scoring (15-over) and tied for 12th in par-4 scoring (28-over) … This was the first tournament this season that at least one Buff didn't shoot a round in the 60s … The average score in the Sonoran was 70.95 for 63 rounds, as all three rounds averaged between 70.86 and 71.0 … Colorado is now 73-56-1 this year against Division competition; the first criteria for qualifying for the NCAA Championships is that teams must have a winning record … O'Loughlin continues to lead the team in stroke average, owning a 71.93 figure for 27 rounds.
