O'Loughlin Ties For Ninth In Individual Race
PALO ALTO, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team finished 14th here Saturday in the 50th edition of Stanford's "The Goodwin," but in the end, it was the proverbial, "what a difference a stroke or two meant."
Host and No. 31 Stanford wound up pulling away from the field, finishing as the only team under par with an 8-under score of 832. The Cardinal entered the final round with a seven-shot lead and would win by 18, as No. 6 Southern California finished a distant second with a 10-over total of 850. No. 4 Oklahoma (854), No. 11 Cal (855) and first round leader, No. 80 Washington (857) rounded out the top five.
The Buffaloes, ranked No. 84 nationally, played perhaps their best tournament of the spring, especially considering the field, ending up in the middle of the pack in 14th with a 29-over total of 869. Only eight shots separated seventh through 15th place in the end, the positions CU bounced around in throughout most of the afternoon, and even more frustrating was the fact that four teams tied for ninth, just two shots better than the Buffs. The four players who contributed to the team total were 6-over for the last five holes, as the Buffs weren't able to keep pace with some of those around them in the standings to close the tournament.
Yet, with 13 top 50 and 19 top 90 schools competing here in the field, the Buffaloes defeated four of the top 50 and seven schools in all ranked ahead of them.
Junior Daniel O'Loughlin led the Buffaloes here with a ninth-place finish, returning to form after a couple of pedestrian performances earlier this month. He wrapped things here with an even-par 70 for a 1-over 211 total on the recently renovated 6,758-yard, par-70 Stanford Golf Course. He had a team-high five birdies, two coming on his last two holes of the round (Nos. 8 and 9), with eight pars and five bogeys on his way to his team-best sixth top 10 finish this year. He was fairly consistent across the board, playing the par-3s at 1-over, the par-4s at 3-over and the par-5s at 3-under.
Freshman John Paterson fashioned a 2-over 72 that enabled him to tie for 45th, as he had an 8-over 218 overall score. He had three birdies and 11 pars against three bogeys and a double to top off the event; all three bogeys came in his first five holes and he had battled back to just 1-over when he doubled No. 2. He added his last bird on the par-3 No. 8 to knock it back down to a couple over.
Junior Ross Macdonald finished up with a 2-over 72 to give him a 14-over 224 score, which tied him for 84th. He had two birdies and 12 pars in the final round (against four bogeys), as he rebounded from a second round 80 to match his score for the first 18 holes. He was 2-over after six holes but played the last two-thirds of his round at even par. He had seven birdies and 27 pars for the week, along with playing the par-5 holes fifth-best in the field at 6-under.
Freshman Kristoffer Max had an 8-over 78, as he ended with a 16-over 226 total, tying him for 95th. In scoring 39 on each nine Saturday, he had 10 pars and eight bogeys in the final round after entering the day with a team-best six birdies over the first two days.
Sophomore Trevor Olkowski carded a 6-over 76 to wrap up things here with a total of 232 (22-over par), the bulk of which resulted from an opening 84; he tied for 117th. He had three birdies Saturday after just two combined in the first two rounds, and had some bad luck to end his day, as he scored a triple bogey on the par-4 No. 9 hole.
"A little bit of the 'two steps forward, one step back' situation," head coach Roy Edwards said. "There was a lot to be encouraged about. We beat some good teams and needed just a little bit more to beat six others. We will get back to work to get ready for Arizona State (CU's next event in two weeks).
"Daniel had a really nice event. It was good to see him get back on track."
Stanford's Brandon Wu and David Snyder tied for medalist honors with 4-under par 206 totals, though Wu won the trophy that goes with the honor in a playoff; three others tied for third, two shots back.
Colorado has one final competition ahead of next month's Pac-12 Championships, as the Buffaloes will compete in Arizona State's Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, April 12-13.
NOTES: Colorado was 11-13 here against Division I competition; the first criteria to qualify for the NCAA Championships as the Buffaloes are now 84-69-1 … The Buffs started on No. 10 and were one of just three teams not to score worse than a bogey on any hole (six birdies, 14 bogeys); Stanford and McNeese State were the others … The average score for the tournament (399 total rounds) was 73.78; it was lowest for Saturday's third round (73.50) … Colorado played the par-5s seventh-best in the field at 12-under but was a bit further down the line on the par-4s (52-over, 16th) and on the par-3's (22nd, plus-21) … O'Loughlin lowered his team-leading stroke average to 71.77; he had five birdies in rounds one and three but had none in the second as he still leads the team (98) … The Buffs also finished 14th in birdies (35) and tied for 15th in pars (151) … The tournament is named for former longtime Stanford head coach Wally Goodwin and was the largest field CU played in this season, with 26 teams and 134 golfers overall.
