Golfers Tied For Sixth At Midway Point Of Pac-12 Championships

April 22, 2019 | Men's Golf

O'Loughlin's tourney-high 12 birdies helps him to fourth individually

EUGENE, Ore. — The University of Colorado men's golf team needed a good start here Monday and did just that, ending the first day of the 60th Annual Pac-12 Conference Championships in a tie for sixth place.

No. 18 Stanford, the hottest team coming in the event with two straight wins, and No. 30 UCLA are tied for the lead at the midway point with 5-under par 705 team scores.  No. 10 California is in third, two back at 707,  with No. 6 Southern California fourth (3-over 7 13) and No. 76 Utah rounding out the top five (716).

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 78 nationally, is tied for sixth with No. 39 Oregon, both closing the first day of action with 7-over 717 totals.   Thus, just 12 strokes separate the top seven teams in the standings, but No. 2 Arizona State is sitting in eighth place, six back of the Buffs and Ducks and likely will ratchet things up a notch Tuesday.

Colorado was in third after the first round with a 3-over team score of 358; it was the best start CU had in the eight years as a member of the Pac-12, besting last year's fourth place standing after 18 holes.  UCLA led with a 2-under 353 score, with Cal in-between the Bruins and Buffs at 357.

After recording an eagle but just three birdies on the front nine with the scorers making the turn at 10-over, CU came back with 13 birdies on the back side – six by junior Daniel O'Loughlin, who ended the first 18 holes tied for the lead with a 4-under 67.  He shot a 31 on the back nine – six birdies and three pars – with four of the birdies in succession from holes 13 through 16.

The second round was similar to the first, as a strong back nine brought the Buffaloes back to within four shots of par as the five designated scorers closed the day with eight birdies and the rest pars.  O'Loughlin again was hot down the stretchm with three birdies on his last seven holes.

O'Loughlin added a second round 70 on the 7,044-yard, par-71 Eugene Country Club course to finish his day with a 5-under 137 total, which has him tied for fourth and three back of the lead.  He had a tournament-best 12 birdies Monday, and was under par on all hole configurations: 1-under on the par-3s, tied for second in the 72-man field, 1-under on the par-4's (tied for sixth) and 3-under on the par-5s (tied for 10th).  He's the only player in the field who can make that claim through 36 holes.

The 137 total by O'Loughlin is a CU career best through two rounds, and is also CU's low total for 36 holes this season.  He played the No. 11 through 18 holes at 8-under between the two rounds.

Junior Ross Macdonald, who tied for second in the Pac-12's last year in the Los Angeles area, turned in a 72-71—143 (1-over) effort to open things here, which has him tied for 22nd.  He had a steady day, with five birdies, 25 pars (tied for sixth in field) and six bogeys.  He birdied two of his last three holes to pull back to even par to close his day.

Sophomore Cole Krantz is tied for 35th with a 75-71—146 performance, and had a special milestone playing in his first Pac-12 championship event.  Krantz had the only eagle on a par-4 hole Monday, doing so on the 490-yard No. 8 hole in the morning when the hole played the toughest in the field at 0.50 over par; in fact, only six players made birdie all day on it and over half of the field shot bogey or worse.  He hit a 6-iron from 190 yards out for his second shot and the ball took a path straight into the hole.  He otherwise had four birdies and 22 pars against eight bogeys and a double for his day.

Sophomore Trevor Olkowski and freshman Kristoffer Max are tied for 41st with 5-over 147 scores.   Olkowski had seven birdies, 17 pars and 12 bogeys while Max recorded five birdies, 23 pars, six bogeys and a double to eventually wind ip with the same totals.

Freshman John Paterson rounded out the Buffalo sextet here, as he fashioned a 72-77—149 scorecard to stand tied for 55th.  He had a team-high 26 pars, tied for fourth in the field, with three birdies, four bogeys and three doubles.

"Overall, a solid day and a good start," head coach Roy Edwards said.  "Daniel played really well.  The guys did a really good job of saving the second round.  We were 12-over at point and then finished the rest of the way at 8-under.  That should be some good momentum into tomorrow.  Each of the six guys had at least one good round who helped us today.  We have to keep competing and being smart and patient.  We also expect the course setup to be tougher the last two days."

Utah's Kyler Dunkle, who was in the same pairing all day with O'Loughlin, shares the individual lead with USC's Justin Suh, both finishing day one with 8-under par scorecards.  Dunkle recorded a 70-64 while Suh had 69-65.

The third round is set for Tuesday with a 11 a.m. mountain time start; Colorado will be paired with No. 2 Arizona State and Washington.  Wednesday's final round will commence at 9 a.m. MDT, with teams starting on the No. 1 and 10 tees both days.

NOTES: O'Loughlin's 6-under 31 on the back nine tied the CU record for most strokes under par in relation to par for nine holes; he matched Steve Jones (back nine, 1980 ASU Thunderbird) and Justin Bardgett (front nine, 2010 Barona Collegiate Cup) … Prior to last year's fourth place standing after the first round, CU had been eighth, 11th, eighth, 11th, sixth and eighth in its first six Pac-12's … The average score Monday (144 total rounds) was 72.97; it was 73.71 for the first go-round and 72.22 for the second 18 holes …Colorado was paired with UCLA and Utah and teed off on the No. 1 tee for both rounds Monday … Colorado needs a good finish to get off the bubble for the NCAA Championships; it first must finish with a winning record against Division I competition (85-80-1 at present), and then move up some spots in the GolfStat rankings, as the NCAA utilizes those for selection of the 81 teams, minus those who qualify automatically by winning their conference title (there are 28 conferences) … Colorado has the fifth-most birdies (36) and pars (132) … The Buffaloes are playing the par-4s the third-best here (11-over), the par-3s the fourth-best (10-over) but is down the line on the par-5s (10th, 4-under) … CU as a team avoided big numbers for the most part, with only eight holes worse than bogey (all doubles); six teams in all had no scores worse than double bogey..
