Colorado earns 1-0 win over Huskers
BOULDER – The Colorado Buffaloes renewed its rivalry with the Nebraska Cornhuskers at Prentup Field this past weekend. The Buffs got the upper hand with a strong second half, earning a 1-0 win.
Senior-to-be Camilla Shymka notched the lone goal of the contest in the 72nd minute, while Jalen Tompkins helped solidify the backend with 14 saves.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: Nebraska came out firing in the early minutes. The Huskers recorded the first two chances of the match but were easily corralled by Tompkins.Â
The best opportunity of the first half came off the foot of Shymka. She rocketed a shot past the Nebraska keeper in the 13th minute. Unfortunately for Colorado, the shot rang off the right post and was cleared to safety.
Tompkins made six saves in the first half, only really getting threatened once. The Huskers lined up for a corner opportunity in the 22nd minute and put a strong header on net. Tompkins jumped up to make the save just below the crossbar and kept the ball out of the net.
The Buffs finally broke through in the later portion of the second half. Katie Joella won the ball and was able to set up Shymka in prime position. Shymka put a strong shot on net, beating the Husker's keeper for a second time. This time her shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced across the goal line, marking the first goal allowed by Nebraska this spring.Â
Tompkins made two more saves late in the contest, including a quality chance for Nebraska in the 85th minute.Â
UP NEXT: Colorado closes out the spring season against Wyoming on Saturday. The match is set for 12 p.m. at Prentup Field. Â

On CU's overall performance
"You could see the reason Nebraska had so much success last season. That was the first goal they have given up all spring and they have played a lot of really good teams. It was a good result for us. They play a style that we had a hard time defending and breaking down. I felt, especially in the second half, we had a little more composure on the ball and created more stuff going forward. It was a good layoff from Katie and a nice finish from Cam. It was a good Saturday for us. It was a good test. It was like a fall game atmosphere."
On Jalen Tompkins and the defense
"Outside the 18-yard line, JJ's going to deal with it. I thought we did give them a little too much space and maybe they were a little unfortunate, especially early in the game to not get something. I felt a lot better about it as the game went on. We gave up a lot of real estate, but I thought we were really good on the counter."
France 2019: The march to the fall will not be complete though. CU will have a few more opportunities to get out and compete this summer before the start of fall camp. The Buffs will play four matches as part of their trip to France in June.
