Taylor Kornieck records the lone goal
BOULDER—The University of Colorado soccer team returned to Prentup Field on Sunday for its first Division I match of the spring against the Air Force Academy. Senior-to-be Taylor Kornieck picked up the day's lone tally in overtime, giving the Buffaloes the 1-0 verdict.
CU was the aggressors from the start, registering 10 shots on goal on the day. AFA's keepers kept a clean slate through the first 94 minutes before Colorado found the net in the 95th.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After 90 minutes of scoreless play, the overtime period was cautious to start.
Colorado was the first team to go on the offensive in the extra time, picking up the winner off a set piece in the 95th minute. Stephanie Zuniga placed her corner kick perfectly in the box, finding Kornieck for the game-winning header.
Despite not finding the net in regulation, the Buffs had no shortage of chances. Zuniga helped set the tone for the Buffs early on. She put a shot high over the net in the game's 2nd minute. She then took the match's first corner kick, eventually finding Kornieck in the box. Kornieck, with her back to the net, managed to put the ball on goal, leading to a leaping save.
The Buffs continued to push in the first half, getting chances from Camilla Shymka and Kornieck. Junior-to-be Katie Joella was inches away from getting the Buffs on the board in the 42nd minute. She launched a shot towards the far post, forcing the AFA keeper to make a diving save.
Colorado's offense continued to tilt the field in the second half. Shymka recorded two more shots on goal, including a one-on-one chance with the AFA keeper in the 61st minute.
The Buffs had three chances to find the net late in regulation. Shymka had a look in the 82nd minute to begin the late push. CU got awarded a direct kick from 40 yards out in the 85th minute. Kornieck stepped up and put the ball low into the Air Force wall. Colorado's final chance in regulation came off a strong shot from the foot of Emily Groark in the 86th minute.
UP NEXT: Colorado hits the road for the only time this spring on Saturday. The Buffs will head west to Provo, Utah, to take on Brigham Young.

On CU's overall performance
"I thought we played well. We created a ton of chances. Credit to Air Force. I thought they defended really well. Their keepers played exceptionally and made some good saves. As the game went, it felt like that goal was coming. We could have been a little bit sharper in the final third, however, we defended really well and didn't give up many chances and scored a nice goal in overtime. Overall, it was a good day to get outside. It was really our first time out at Prentup in the full 120'x75' against a Division I opponent. It was a good day for us and we are looking forward to next weekend."
