Klecker Named Pac-12 Athlete of the Week

April 09, 2019 | Track and Field

SAN FRANCISCO – The University of Colorado track and field junior Joe Klecker has been named the Pac-12 track Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.

Klecker earned the honor after running the fastest 1,500 in the nation last week at 3:45.11, and by doing so at altitude he took over the national-lead after the altitude conversion dropped his time to 3:39.75. The next closest time in the nation is William Paulson at the Stanford Invitational at 3:42.53.

This is the ninth Pac-12 Athlete of the Week award in CU history and the first in the 1,500-meter run. Klecker joins Joe Morris as the only Pac-12 Male Track Athlete of the Week after Morris ran a pair of top-10 sprint times at this same meet in 2013.

USC's Chanel Brissett took the women's track athlete of the week honor after running the nation's best time in the 100 hurdles (12.87), Arizona's Jordan Geist earned the men's field athlete of the week honor after throwing the national lead in the shot put (21.28m | 69-9.75) and Mackenzie Little was named the women's field athlete of the week honor by extending her NCAA-lead in the javelin (59.47m | 195-1). Both Little and Geist were named the USTFCCCA National Athletes of the Week.

Colorado stays in-state this weekend to compete at the Colorado State Ram Quadrangular this Saturday in Fort Collins.
