Buffs Finish 13th At Silverado Showdown

April 09, 2019 | Women's Golf

NAPA, Calif. — The University of Colorado women's golf team ended the Silverado Showdown 13th overall after the Buffaloes shot a 26-over 314 in the final round on Tuesday.

"Tough day at a really bad time for the team," head coach Anne Kelly said. "We had trouble putting and made too many doubles and big numbers. It was disappointing because we made real progress the last two days. We need to regroup quickly and get ready for conference next week."

Northwestern took home the trophy after a three-day score of 870 as the Wildcats were just 6-over for the 56-hole tournament. Southern California finished second after recording a 2-under 286 in the final round for a total score of 874. Rounding out the top five were three more Pac-12 opponents in Stanford (881), Oregon (884) and Washington (886).

The Buffs, who entered the third day tied for seventh, hit a rough patch with five double bogeys and on triple on the day. They finished the round with 314 and ended the tournament with a 49-over 913.

Freshman Malak Bouraeda was 1-over through the first two rounds, which tied for sixth, but an unfortunate triple on her fourth hole of the day, followed by a double, put her at 6-over early, making it hard to recover.  She was at nine-over after a double on No. 16, but was able to collect herself and make par on the final seven holes. She finished tied for 34th overall with a 9-over 226.

Senior Kirsty Hogdkins finished the tournament 42nd overall after shooting an 11-over 227. She was 5-over (77) in the final round after recording rounds of 76 and 74, respectively, in the first two days. She played pretty consistent on the day, but the double she recorded on the par-3 No. 11 put her at 3-over in the day. She collected 14 pars, seven of those in-a-row, and three bogeys during the round.

Freshman Kelsey Webster did not have the start she wanted to the third round, recording a double bogey on the par-4 No. 8, putting her 2-over from the start. She made par on the following four holes before she sank a birdie on the par-4 No. 13. She went on to finish her round with eight additional pars and four bogeys.

Senior Haley Nist and sophomore Elle Otten ended up tied for 74th. They both began the day at 13-over and both shot 7-over 79s in the final round. Nist recorded 10 pars, seven bogeys and one double, while Otten had one birdie, 10 pars, six bogeys and one double.

Competing in this tournament as an individual, senior Gillian Vance saved her best round for last. After recording rounds of 83 on the first two days, she bounced back with a 3-over 75, which included her first eagle of the season. Starting on the 18th hole, she made four straight pars before she recorded a bogey on the par-4 No. 4 hole. She countered it with an eagle on the following hole, a par-5. Vance stayed fairly steady with 12 pars in addition to five bogeys. Vance ended up 88th overall with a 25-over 241.

Northwestern's Brooke Riley held on for the win as she recorded a 1-under 215 for the event. After two straight 2-under 70s, she shot a 3-over 75 on Tuesday. Southern California's Malia Nam was just one stroke behind in second, finishing with a 216.

This was the final tournament before the 2019 Pac-12 Championships, which will be held at the Palos Verdes Country Club in Palos Verdes, Calif., April 15-17.
