Regional Play Begins Monday
PULLMAN —University of Colorado junior golfer Daniel O'Loughlin is one of 75 players competing here beginning Monday in the NCAA Men's Golf Championships, as is set to participate in the Northwest (Pullman) Regional through Wednesday in a bid to advance to the NCAA Finals later this month.
A total of 14 teams are competing here along with five individuals who earned invitations when their schools did not qualify. They will compete on the Palouse Ridge Golf Club course, a 7,232-yard, par-70 configuration for the event; it will have a rather unique set of five par-3s and three par-5s with the standard 10 par-4s.
O'Loughlin led the Buffaloes in stroke average this season with a 72.0 figure, which is currently tied for the eighth-best for a single season in program history. He posted CU's best score in six of the team's 12 events, and also led the team in a dozen categories: top 5, 10 and 20 finishes (3, 6 and 6, respectively), rounds in the 60s (9), subpar rounds (16), rounds of par or better (19), percentage of rounds counting toward team scoring (1.000, 37 of 37), first round average (69.91), middle round average (72.46), birdies (117), pars (430), and percentage of holes of par or better (82.3). He won the first tournament of the season, firing a 7-under 209 to win Air Force's Gene Miranda Invitational last September.
"It is exciting for Daniel to be headed to the NCAA Regional in Pullman," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Palouse Ridge is a fantastic course and it is one I think Daniel will like. His overall game is very consistent and the course is a fair test that top players like Daniel should really enjoy. The regional fields are always loaded, and if Daniel plays well he should be in the hunt for the lone individual spot to advance to the NCAA Finals."
Since the regional format came into being in 1989, O'Loughlin is the fifth Buff to qualify as an individual without his teammates. He joins Stephen Carroll (2003), Edward McGlasson (2005), Justin Bardgett (2010) and Derek Fribbs (2012). Carroll posted the best finish, tying for 20th in Manhattan, Kan., with a 1-under 2015 scores, but did not advance to the Finals. Three Buffaloes have advanced to the NCAA Championship Finals as individuals out of the regionals, doing so when CU failed to qualify as a team; the last to was David Oraee in 2015, when he finished second in the Central Regional in Noblesville, Ind. A dozen CU players were invited to the NCAA's prior to regional play, the most famous coming in 1967 when Hale Irwin claimed medalist honors at Shawnee-on-Delaware, Pa.
O'Loughlin will tee off on No. 1 at 10:42 a.m. MDT, and will be paired with the No. 3 golfers from Iona and Wright State. The second and third rounds will follow on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
Six regional tournaments will be conducted simultaneously across the nation over the next three days. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Finals, which will be May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
