Nayar Selected to Malaysia Fed Cup Team
May 29, 2019 | Tennis
BOULDER – Colorado's freshman tennis star Sara Nayar has been selected to represent her home nation of Malaysia in the 2019 Fed Cup beginning June 19th in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Â
"This is my first Fed Cup and I'm really excited, but kind of nervous too," said Nayar. "It's a really big honor to be selected to represent your country. Malaysia is going to have a home court advantage, and I think this will make the event even more special and memorable for me."
Â
Malaysia will host seven nations; Bangladesh, Hong Kong, China, New Zealand, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan at the National Tennis Centre. The seven teams will compete in a pair of pools with the winner of each pool advancing to a playoff to determine which nation will advance to the Asia/Oceania Zone Group 1.
Â
"I've gained a lot of experience playing for CU and I believe this has helped me prepare for Fed Cup," said Nayar. "Team spirit is a huge component in college tennis and Fed Cup. And I think a big reason why I could pull through some of my tough matches this season is because of my teammates/the crowd cheering me on."
Â
Nayar led the Buffaloes this past season, reaching a high ranking of No.89 in the nation in singles play. She had a 13-9 overall record including three wins against top-50 ranked players.
Â
"My father (Murali) has represented Malaysia in Davis Cup and my older sister, Uma, played Fed Cup for Malaysia in 2017," said Nayar. "I'm very thankful for the opportunity to follow in their footsteps."
Â
"I have family in Malaysia, and we're all hoping I get put into the singles or doubles line up so that they can watch me play! My grandmother is a huge tennis fan, so I've got my fingers crossed."
