Hodgkins Tied For 14th Through First Round At East Lansing Regional
May 06, 2019 | Women's Golf
EAST LANSING, Mich. — With one round down and two to go, University of Colorado junior Kirsty Hodgkins is tied for 14th at the NCAA East Lansing Regional.
"Kirsty played a very solid round of golf today with 16 pars, one birdie and one bogey," head coach Anne Kelly said. "She hit the ball very well, giving herself several birdie opportunities. She also putted well today, but just could not get the birdie putts to drop. She got a couple of bad breaks with some tough lies, but also made some key up and downs."
Hodgkins carded an even 72 on the 6,387-yard, par 72 Forest Akers West Golf Course on Monday and recorded the best day one scorecard of the six individuals in the field. Charlotte's Cecilie Finne-Ipsen and East Tennessee's Hee Ying Loy both recorded a 3-over 75 in the round. Behind that duo is Ashley Lau (Michigan), who shot a 4-over 76, and Emma Albrecht (Notre Dame) and Tereza Melecka (East Tennessee State) were 5-over.
"It is a challenging course with narrow fairways and thick rough," Kelly said. "Kirsty hit almost every fairway today. We are looking forward to tomorrow and seeing if she can move up the leaderboard."
Hodgkins started on the front nine and made par on the first four holes. Then, on the par-4 No. 5, she sank her only birdie of the day. She finished the first nine with a 1-under 35, making four more pars. She continued to play a very steady game on the back nine, recording eight straight pars before a bogey on No. 18.
"I thought she played extremely solid," assistant coach Brent Franklin said. "A couple of breaks could of gone her way, and it very easily could have been two or three shots better, but she played a terrific round. She did get a horrible break on the last hole, but those things happen in tournament golf and she handled it well."
In addition to competing during the day, Hodgkins has the extra pressure of taking finals while away this week, which impressed Franklin.
"Hats off to her as well," he said. "She took a final last night and is taking another one now (after 18-holes) and has another tomorrow night. So, she is burning the candle at both ends."
Hodgkins will play the second round on Tuesday, May 7, and will tee off at 8:58 a.m. ET on No. 1.
Kent State's Pimnipa Panthong leads the field with a 4-under 68. Haylin Harris (Michigan State), is right on her heels at 3-under. There are three athletes, Bethany Wu (UCLA), Kelly Whaley (UNC) and Kari Bellville (Indiana), that are tied for third at 2-under. Kent State also sits on top of the team leaderboard with a 6-under 282.
