Colorado Soccer Signs Kentucky Standout
February 02, 2000 | Soccer
BOULDER - Kristin Robertson, a forward from Lexington, Ky., is the latest addition to the University of Colorado soccer roster head coach Austin Daniels announced Wednesday.
"We think Kristin will push the starters from last season," said Daniels. "We hope that she can make significant contributions whether it's starting or coming off the bench. We lost just one scholarship player from last season, and Kristin is the type of player we were looking to add to fill that spot. She will definitely make an excellent addition to our program."
KRISTIN ROBERTSON, F, 5-11, Lexington, Ky. (Lexington Catholic) FC Kelping Ben-Gals '82
Robertson, a four-year letterwinner at Lexington Catholic High School under coach Tery Quigley, was nothing short of a goal-scoring machine during her prep career, scoring 91 goals and notching 28 assists from her forward spot. As a senior, Robertson's prep squad won their district before falling in the regional final. Her final year as a prep saw her score 25 goals and dish 10 assists en route to all-Region IV honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), as well as earning team MVP, city MVP, and first team allstate honors. Her junior year Catholic fell in the state final, claiming district and regional titles en route to the final match. Robertson put up amazing numbers that year as well, scoring 33 goals and eight assists, earning all-Region IV honors from the NSCAA as well as first team all-state, and taking MVP honors from the regional and district tournaments as well as her high school squad. As a sophomore, LCHS took second in the region, first in the district, while Robertson scored 20 goals and had five assists. She earned honorable mention all-state honors, as well as second team all-region, all-tournament for the district, and all-city honors. Her first year, she notched 13 goals and five assists as LCHS lost in the state final while claiming the district and regional championships. She was named rookie of the year at LCHS, and was also selected district all-tournament. During her junior year, Robertson tied the state record at that time for consecutive games with a goal at nine-straight, notching 15 goals in nine games, with seven of those games in postseason play. On the club side, Robertson plays for FC Kolping Ben-Gals out of Cincinnati, Ohio for coach Mike Rust. FC Kolping is the defending Ohio South state champion.
Robertson has racked up numerous awards, including the 1999 Kentucky High School Sportswoman of the Year, selected by the Women's Sports Foundation. She was a finalist for Kentucky's 1999 AP High School Female Athlete of the Year, was the 1996 Sportsgirl of the Year from the Women's Sports Foundation, and was included in Who's Who in American High School Sports. She lists her top games as the 1998 regional final game against Henry Clay High School, when she scored both goals in a 2-1 win, and scoring the go-ahead goal in the 1998 state semifinal against an all-American goalkeeper.
The daughter of Larry and Gwen Robertson, Kristin selected Colorado over Wisconsin, Michigan State, Kentucky and North Carolina State. She is undecided on her major at Colorado and will be enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences. Robertson will not be the first collegiate athlete in her family, as her father was a four-year letterwinner in baseball as a pitcher at Eastern Kentucky University. Robertson lettered for four years on the LCHS varsity basketball team, and lists the biggest moment of her high school career as starting for LCHS on the 1999 team which claimed the Kentucky state championship and was ranked No. 21 in the country by USA Today. She earned various honors in basketball, including all-district tournament team as well as honorable mention all-state as a junior, with her senior season currently underway. Daniels on Robertson: "You can tell by her records in high school that she is a goal scorer at the levels she's played. We are hoping that she can continue to do that on the next level. She's a tall, strong and fast player, who is good in the air. She'll do some good things for us right away."
