Colorado Soccer Standout Kendall Pata Out For Season

October 04, 1999 | Soccer

BOULDER - Kendall Pata, a starting defender on the University of Colorado women's soccer team (9-4-0, 2-2-0) has suffered a season-ending knee injury head coach Austin Daniels announced Monday.

"Kendall is a key member of this team, and she will continue to be through this injury," said Daniels. "She is highly-respected as a member of this team not only in her play on the field, but in the intangibles she brings to this team in terms of her attitude and work ethic. Her contributions to our program are immeasurable."

According to Colorado soccer trainer Kelli Lotito, a MRI indicated Sunday morning that Pata has torn the anterior cruciate, posterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in her right knee, as well as a partial tear of her meniscus and a probable slight fracture in her femur.

The rehabilitation for this type of injury can range anywhere from six to nine months. A surgery date has not yet been set, and a medical redshirt for this season is not likely to be granted due to the number of games Pata has played in (12).

"Kendall epitomizes a hard worker and has such a unique style of defending," said team captain Melissa Cartmell. "Her presence on the field is so dominant and will be missed. We won for her Sunday and we will continue to win more games for her."

The injury occurred with just three minutes remaining in the game against Oklahoma on Friday, Oct. 1, when Pata collided with an OU player. Pata has started all but one game in her career at Colorado. She made her collegiate debut in the season-opener in 1998 against North Carolina, coming off the bench to mark U.S. National team star Cindy Parlow, who did not record another shot in the game.

The Buffs are coming off a road trip which saw them fall 4-2 to Oklahoma on Friday, and then rebound to defeat Oklahoma State 3-1 on Sunday. Colorado returns home to continue the Big 12 slate, facing Iowa State at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and No. 4 Nebraska at 1 :00 p.m. on Sunday at Pleasant View Soccer Complex in North Boulder. PVSC is located at the corner of Foothills Pkwy. and the Diagonal Highway, and admission to all CU home games is free.
