Simpson on to finals
DES MOINES – The second day of competition at the US Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, sent another former Colorado track athlete through to finals while two others concluded action.
Emma Coburn, the heavy favorite in the women's 3,000 steeplechase, breezed through the prelims with a second heat win time of 9:51.43. The defending world champion stuck in fifth for the first three laps before she vaulted into the lead, clocking the fastest lap of the competition in her final trip around the track in 1:13.08. American-record holder Courtney Frerichs ran the fastest prelim time of 9:46.35, followed by three-time NCAA Champion Allie Ostrander.
The first on the track for the day was former CU distance runner and Niwot alum Nick Harris. Harris finished 27th overall in the men's 1,500 in 3:59.88. Harris finished ninth in the first heat.
Concluding the men's decathlon today was Andrew Ghizzone. The decathlete highlighted the final day of competition with a ninth-place finish in the pole vault by clearing 4.60 meters. The event pushed himself up to 13th in the competition, finishing with 6,713 points. Ghizzone posted 12th-place finishes in the 400 (50.42), 110 hurdles (15.40) and 1,500 (4:57.43).
Action continues tomorrow with Jenny Simpson in the finals of the women's 1,500. Simpson will be the only Buff competing Saturday at 2:42 p.m. MT.
