Simpson Makes World Team
DES MOINES – One of Colorado's greatest track and field athlete, Jenny Simpson, showed out today with a runner-up finish in the women's 1,500 finals to secure a spot on the 2019 World Championships team.
Simpson crossed the finish line after the first 300 meters in 10th overall, but quickly picked up the pace to second overall behind Lauren Johnson. The race continued with a large group crossing the line for the bell lap with Simpson leading, Johnson in second and Shelby Houlihan in third. Simpson and Houlihan both ran 1:05.91 in the 400-meters leading up to the bell.
The final lap made the difference as Houlihan hunted down Simpson to take the victory at 4:03.18. Both women ran under 61-seconds in the final lap, but Houlihan's 1:00.59 was four-tenths of a second faster.
The US will be represented by Houlihan, Simpson and Nikki Hiltz. Also in the race, NCAA Champion Sinclaire Johnson of Oklahoma State ran 4:03.72 to finish fourth in the third-best time ever run by a collegian, trailing Oregon's Jessica Hull from the Prefontaine Classic and Simpson's NCAA record of 3:59.90.
The final day of the US Championships continues tomorrow with Emma Coburn in the finals of the steeplechase at 5:07 p.m. MT. Volunteer coach Riley Masters and former Buff Connor Winter will both be in the men's 5,000, while Simpson is entered in the women's 5,000 to conclude the meet for the former Buffaloes.
