Coburn Captures Eighth US Championship

DES MOINES – Colorado alum Emma Coburn captured her eighth US Championship title in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase today in the final day at the US Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

Coburn sat in the pack through the first half of the race, moving from seventh to fifth just over the halfway mark. The champ kept with the 1:18 lap pace until she stormed to the front with a 1:10 and never looked back, closing the final 800-meters with consecutive 67-second laps. Coburn continued to outpace the field in those final three laps, marking the fastest split in each of them.

Though Coburn was automatically qualified for the championship, she secured her spot in fashion with a 9:25.63 winning time to beat Courtney Frerichs by a second and Colleen Quigley by more than five seconds. NCAA Champion Allie Ostrander picked up the final qualifying spot with Coburn's auto with a 9:38.52. All four women combine for the past seven of nine NCAA Championships.

Also in action today was volunteer assistant coach Riley Masters and former Buff Connor Winter in the men's 5,000 finals. Masters finished sixth in the race with a 13:31.39, while Winters was 12th at 13:56.48. Masters moved into the top 10 after the first mile of racing, then bounced between eighth and 10th until the final 800 meters when he overtook a pair of runners with 2-minute final half. Winter slowly moved up throughout the race from 19th to 14th, then moved up to 12th with a 65-second closing lap.

Colorado's two premier alumni will be in action at the World Championships in Qatar that begin at the end of September and run for nine days. This is Coburn's fourth World Championship and she is the defending champion in the steeplechase. Jenny Simpson runs in her sixth World Championship, having won the 1,500 in 2011 and placed second in 2013 and 2017.
